The El Hombre is a three-knob overdrive pedal from J. Rockett Audio Designs, built as a homage to Billy Gibbons' early ZZ Top tones. Premier Guitar described it as "simple in format but complex in its abilities," with a tone section the site found very effective1. It sits in the company's line alongside drives like the Blue Note and The Dude, but it aims at a specific target: the touch and tone of what Premier Guitar called "a certain long bearded Texan"2.

Inside, it is an analog, op-amp-driven box with silicon clipping diodes, according to Premier Guitar's review3. Delicious Audio called it "born for blues," but noted it is a flexible overdrive that can get pretty angry at higher gain settings4. It shipped in 2022, available now at launch priced at £199 / €219, with a Day of the Dead-style skull graphic on top5.

What it does: blues overdrive with bite

With all three controls at noon, guitar.com's reviewer Ed Oleszko heard "a punchy, mids-heavy overdrive with a hint of fuzz in its top end"6. That mid-forward character is the pedal's core: it is aimed at players who want drive that pushes an amp rather than replacing it, in the territory of early ZZ Top records rather than modern high gain.

Premier Guitar's product page summed up its range as spanning "from added harmonics to chewy sag"1. The pedal is not limited to one flavor, though. The Bite control (covered below) moves it between smoother, Dumble-adjacent territory and more aggressive, Plexi-like sounds, which is what reviewers meant when they called a three-knob format more capable than it looks.

The controls: Gain, Bite and Volume

The control set is three knobs: Gain, Volume and Bite5. There is no separate EQ section; the Bite knob does the tonal shaping on its own, and Guitar World's reviewer Trevor Curwen found it "exerts a powerful influence on the sound"7.

ControlWhat it does
GainControls the amount of gain4
BiteBrings highs forward or smooths them out4
VolumeControls the volume of the pedal4

The Bite knob is the one that defines the pedal. On Premier Guitar's First Look video, the presenter explained the two ends of its range72:

"When you bring the bite control up it becomes more aggressive, turn it down making it smoother and more reminiscent of Dumble tones."
Premier Guitar2

Pedal of the Day put the same idea in amp terms: bring the Bite control up and you get "wide open Plexi sounds"8. So a player after a smoother, rounder drive can back the Bite off, while someone wanting more edge and top-end cut runs it higher. That single knob is what lets the pedal cover both the Gibbons-style blues territory it was designed around and harder-rocking settings.

History: built around Billy Gibbons' tone

The El Hombre's origin story is a little sideways. According to Premier Guitar's review, when the builders at J. Rockett hit upon the formula for the El Hombre circuit, they were actually chasing a box that would zero in on Eddie Van Halen's early tone, with an ear open to ZZ Top's influence on Eddie. The circuit was found in old designs from that project3.

Pedal of the Day told the story from the designer's side: J. Rockett's designers were listening to early ZZ Top records, including ZZ Top's (First Album), Tres Hombres and Fandango, to see if they could hear those influences, and one circuit that popped out sounded natural with a strange familiarity. It was then tweaked for early ZZ Top tones, and since the pedal was aimed right at Billy Gibbons and his tone, that is where the name "El Hombre" came from8.

MusicRadar made the distinction clear at launch: it is not a signature pedal in collaboration with the man himself, rather a homage to BFG's Texas tones5. So there is no Gibbons endorsement behind it, only the builders' aim at his recorded sound.

What reviewers said

guitar.com's review rated it 8 out of 10, with the verdict:

"A solid overdrive that covers a surprising amount of tonal ground with just three knobs."
Ed Oleszko, guitar.com6

The review also flagged the practical details players care about on a small board: space-saving top-mounted sockets and a true-bypass footswitch6. Pedal of the Day went further on versatility, calling it "a key addition to any rig"8, while Premier Guitar's First Look framed its scope as "Billy Gibbons tones are just the beginning in this drive with bite"2.

Questions

Is the El Hombre a Billy Gibbons signature pedal?

No. MusicRadar reported that it is not a signature pedal made in collaboration with Billy Gibbons, but rather a homage to his Texas tones5. The name came from the builders aiming the circuit at his tone, not from an artist partnership.

How much current does the J. Rockett El Hombre draw?

It draws 18 mA. Premier Guitar's review noted it runs on 9V DC at that draw3, and Guitar World lists power as a 9V battery or a 9V to 18V DC adaptor, not supplied, at the same 18 mA7.

Can the El Hombre do Eddie Van Halen tones?

Its circuit came out of a project that was chasing exactly that. Premier Guitar reported the builders were originally zeroing in on Eddie Van Halen's early tone, with an ear open to ZZ Top's influence on Eddie, and the El Hombre circuit was found in those old designs before being tweaked toward early ZZ Top tones3.

Where is the J. Rockett El Hombre made?

It is hand made in the US, according to MusicRadar5, and Guitar World and guitar.com both list its origin as USA76.
