The "Cactus Totem" Harmonious Monk is a limited, hand-painted version of the Harmonious Monk from JAM Pedals, an all-analog tremolo pedal with two voices: harmonic tremolo and amplitude tremolo. In Harmonic mode the pedal creates what JAM describes as rich, phase-like movement, while Amplitude mode provides traditional volume modulation1. It is part of a family that also includes the Big Chill and the "Relic" Harmonious Monk mk.2, and it sits among the broader range of tremolo pedals.

What it does

Tremolo pedals vary the volume of your signal in time with a repeating wave. The Harmonious Monk adds a second way of doing it: harmonic tremolo, which JAM says creates rich, phase-like movement, alongside the conventional amplitude approach of traditional volume modulation1. The two voices give the pedal a range that runs from a gentle pulse to a hard chop, and the circuit is all analog throughout1.

The controls: Speed, Depth, Mix, Level and wave shape

The external knobs cover the essentials, and internal trimmers handle tone shaping.

The CHOP function is a setting worth knowing: in Amplitude mode with the square wave selected, turning Depth fully clockwise activates a kill-dry CHOP, alternating between sound and silence1. That is the gated, stuttering effect players often use for rhythmic parts.

The pedal draws a maximum of 145 mA at 9V DC, and JAM recommends an isolated supply1. That is enough to rule out some daisy-chain outputs and low-current power supplies.

The startup state is configurable too. The default is off, but to have the pedal switch on at power-up, disconnect power, hold the ON/OFF footswitch and reconnect power1.

A one-of-a-kind hand-painted enclosure

The Cactus Totem is a limited artwork edition: JAM describes every limited artwork pedal as a one-of-a-kind hand-painted piece, and the pedal received will differ in detail from the photos shown1. Other artwork editions of the same circuit include the "Beast" Harmonious Monk and the "Arachnid" Harmonious Monk, and the "Achenbach" Harmonious Monk mk.2 carries the Mk.2 circuit in its own artwork.

Questions

Is the JAM Harmonious Monk true bypass?

Yes. JAM Pedals lists the Harmonious Monk's bypass as true bypass, so when the pedal is off, your guitar's signal passes through without the circuit in the way. That matters on a pedalboard where the pedal sits in front of an amp, since it keeps the unaffected tone intact when the effect is switched off.

How much current does the Harmonious Monk draw?

JAM Pedals specifies a maximum current draw of 145 mA at 9V DC, center negative, with an isolated supply recommended. That is more than some daisy-chain outputs deliver comfortably, so it is worth checking what your power supply can give before adding the Harmonious Monk to a shared output.

How do you get the chop effect on the Harmonious Monk?

Select Amplitude mode and the square wave, then turn the Depth knob fully clockwise. That activates the kill-dry CHOP function, which alternates between sound and silence in time with the LFO, giving the hard, gated stutter that players usually mean by chop.

Can the Harmonious Monk be set to turn on at power-up?

Yes. The default startup state is off, but you can change it: disconnect power, hold the ON/OFF footswitch and reconnect power. The pedal then remembers to switch on when it receives power, which is handy with a loop switcher or a rig that powers up mid-song.

What does the internal Treble trimmer on the Harmonious Monk do?

The internal Treble trimmer shapes the effected signal, along with internal Midrange and Bass trimmers. They let you tailor the tone of the tremolo's output inside the pedal, beyond what the external knobs reach, so the effect can sit right with your amp and other pedals.

How big is the JAM Harmonious Monk?

JAM Pedals gives the dimensions, including jacks and controls, as 7.5 x 12 x 5.6 cm, or 2.9 x 4.7 x 2.2 inches, with a weight of 300 g, about 0.66 lb. It is a standard-sized enclosure that fits a normal pedalboard footprint.
