The JOYO R-11 Baatsin is an overdrive and distortion pedal from Joyo that puts eight preset drive sounds in one analog box. Instead of buying separate pedals for a Tube Screamer-style midrange push, a crunchy rhythm tone or a high-gain lead, you select among eight voices on a single unit. Joyo's own description of the concept is direct123:

"We picked 8 classic Overdrive and Distortion sounds after we studied a great many guitarists' preference, and finally pulled off one pedal by pure analogue circuit. So it's good value for money, one pedal offering several genres of music."1

Gearnews reported the pedal's announcement on 6 March 2020, when no price had been set yet2.

The eight drive sounds

The Baatsin's eight preset voices are named on the pedal2:

NumberPreset name
1DEATH
2Sweety
3B. Boost
4T808
5Overdrive
6Crunchy
7Rioter
8OC Drive

Gearnews noted when covering the launch that several of these appear to be replicas of well-known circuits: the names suggest the Ibanez/Maxon Tube Screamer 808 (T808), the Fulltone OCD (OC Drive) and the Suhr Riot (Rioter), with a Timmy-style overdrive also suggested for one of the other positions2. That reading comes from the press, not from Joyo, which does not name the circuits it drew on.

Controls and the LED modes

Four knobs shape the sound: Vol sets the output level, Tone sets the brightness, Drive sets the amount of gain, and OD Mod is a fourth control tied to the pedal's mode system1. The LED Mod section offers three settings for the indicator light: Sync, Always and Off1. Joyo's product page lists these modes without further explanation of how Sync behaves.

Because the eight voices are presets rather than fully independent circuits with their own knob sets, the four controls apply to whichever drive sound is selected. That is the trade-off of the multi-voice format compared with buying separate pedals: you get range in one box, but less per-voice tweaking than a dedicated overdrive or distortion pedal would offer1.

Power and connections

The Baatsin runs on DC 9V with a center-negative plug, drawing a rated 30mA1. There is no battery option, so it needs a wall adapter or a pedalboard power supply.

No battery compartment: the Baatsin is listed as not battery powered, so plan on a 9V DC center-negative supply output1.

Connections are standard 6.35mm instrument jacks, with an input impedance of 470KΩ and an output impedance of 470Ω1. The pedal measures 125 x 78.5 x 48mm and weighs 290g1, a compact R Series-style enclosure. Bypass is true bypass, so the signal passes unprocessed when the pedal is off1.

Where it came from

Joyo announced the Baatsin R-11 on 6 March 2020 as an 8-in-1 analog overdrive and distortion pedal, with the price still to be confirmed at that point; Gearnews estimated it would land around GBP 100, though that was the writer's guess rather than an announced figure2. It joined a Joyo lineup that had recently expanded with the multi-effects Tone Chain TC-1 and later added R Series drives such as the R-17 Dark Flame and the RAT-style JF-21 Splinter.

Questions

Does the JOYO R-11 Baatsin take a battery?

No. Joyo lists the Baatsin as not battery powered, so it runs only from an external power supply. You will need a 9V DC center-negative adapter or an isolated output on your pedalboard power supply to run it.

Is the JOYO R-11 Baatsin true bypass?

Yes. Joyo's product page lists the signal bypass type as true bypass, so when the pedal is switched off the guitar signal passes through without the circuit coloring it. That suits players who want a clean signal chain around the pedal.

What does the OD Mod knob do on the Baatsin?

OD Mod is one of the four controls, alongside Vol, Tone and Drive. It is tied to the pedal's LED Mod section, which offers Sync, Always and Off modes for the indicator light. The maker's page lists it among the controls but does not detail its full behavior.

Is the JOYO R-11 Baatsin analog or digital?

It is analog. Joyo says it pulled off the eight drive sounds with a pure analogue circuit rather than digital modeling, and Gearnews reported the same when the pedal was announced in March 2020.

What are the LED modes on the R-11 Baatsin?

The LED Mod control offers three modes: Sync, Always and Off. Sync presumably flashes the light in time with your playing or the effect state, Always keeps it lit, and Off turns it off, though Joyo's page lists the modes without further explanation.

What polarity does the R-11 Baatsin power supply need?

It needs a DC 9V supply with a center-negative plug, the standard arrangement for most guitar pedals. Rated current consumption is 30mA, so a typical pedalboard power supply output will run it comfortably.
