The Keeley Compressor Mini is a small, two-knob compressor pedal from Keeley Electronics, launched on 15 September 20211. It is an all-analog stomper in a compact, pedalboard-friendly enclosure, and it is designed to be about as simple as a compressor gets: one knob for level, one for compression, and nothing else2.
What sets it apart from most two-knob compressors is the circuit. Delicious Audio reports it is not a rehash of an old design but a brand new circuit delivering what mixing engineers call "Manhattan-style compression", also known as parallel compression3. MusicRadar describes the result as a form of parallel compression that tightens up your sound without squashing all of its dynamics4. In practice that means the pedal mixes compressed and clean signals for a more natural, dynamic-sounding tone3.
What it does: parallel compression in a mini pedal
Parallel compression is the trick of running a heavily compressed signal alongside the untouched clean signal, so you get the sustain and evenness of compression while keeping the attack and dynamics of your playing. On most pedals you do this yourself with a blend knob. On the Mini, since there are only Level and Comp knobs, the blending of the two signals happens automatically depending on the position of the Comp control3.
The Mini also carries a preamp. Pedal of the Day describes it as a built-in preamp for what the site calls incredible guitar tone, and quotes the pedal's preamp tone as "legendary; pushing both pedals and amplifiers to their greatest potential"6. MusicRadar notes that with the onboard preamp, the Level control can push the pedals in front of it and your guitar amp, or alternatively be set at unity gain5.
The controls: Level and Comp
There are controls for Level and Compression, and that is that4. Robert Keeley had been working on a tweaked, simplified version of his compressor circuit designed to make it as easy as possible to use1.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Level | Controls output volume. With the onboard preamp it can push the pedals in front of it and your amp, or sit at unity gain5 |
| Comp | Controls how much compression and sustain you have in your signal5 |
Premier Guitar's review characterizes the two knobs as output level and compression threshold, noting that the attack, release and ratio are left up to the circuit itself7. For players used to four-knob compressors, that is the trade: fewer decisions, faster setup. Pedal of the Day found that with just the Level and Comp knobs, a great sound is easy to dial up in literally a minute, and that the range of tones is still extremely present6.
One useful reference point: Premier Guitar found that unity gain generally occurs at around 30 to 40 percent of the Level knob's range7. The same review found that most settings north of noon lend a fat but tasteful bump in the low-mid zone that makes the preamp sound extra sweet with humbuckers7.
History and versions: from the Keeley Compressor to the No420 edition
The Mini sits at the end of a long line. Robert Keeley built his original Keeley Compressor in 2001, based on R. G. Keen's schematic, and it went through two-knob and four-knob versions over the years8. The two-knob original was discontinued at the end of 2014 in favor of the updated four-knob version with input trim and attack knobs on the outside of the enclosure8. The Keeley Compressor Plus, released in 2017, added a clean blend and converted Attack to a switch9.
The Mini is in some ways a step back toward the beginning. As Premier Guitar put it7:
"In a way, the Mini is a return to the original Keeley Compressor's roots."7
The Mini launched in two finishes: Standard Black Neon and a limited-edition Arctic White, the latter restricted to the first 1,000 units4. Guitar World reported the Arctic White as a limited-edition run of only 1,000 units, with both versions priced at $129104. The electronics sit in an eye-popping case bearing colorful retro-flavored stripes2.
In April 2023, Keeley followed up with the No420 Custom Shop edition, a special Custom Shop version of the Compressor Mini refinished in orange, with an illustration of a guitar effects mini-pedal smoking what looks like a non-regulation cigarette5. It was priced at $129, the same as the standard pedal, and the first batch sold out, with a restock shipping on or before 2 May 20235.
What reviewers said
Reception was positive across the press:
- Gearnews found the demo video quite impressive and liked the price point, calling it reasonable for a quality compressor pedal1.
- Pedal of the Day highlighted the increased sustain range for even more subtle compression, and praised how quickly a great sound can be dialed up6.
- Premier Guitar concluded that if small size and the joy of setting and forgetting are priorities, the Compressor Mini is a value that is tough to beat7.
"And if small size and the joy of setting and forgetting are priorities, the Compressor Mini is a value that's tough to beat."
Questions
Does the Keeley Compressor Mini have a blend knob?
No. The Mini has only Level and Comp knobs, and the blending of clean and compressed signals happens automatically depending on where you set the Comp control. It is a form of parallel compression, but you do not dial in the blend yourself the way you would on a pedal with a dedicated blend knob.
Where is unity gain on the Keeley Compressor Mini?
Premier Guitar's review found that unity gain generally occurs at around 30 to 40 percent of the Level knob's range. Below that the pedal sits at matched volume; above it, the onboard preamp can push the pedals in front of it and your guitar amp harder.
Is the Keeley Compressor Mini true bypass?
Yes. Both MusicRadar and Pedal of the Day report that the Compressor Mini is true bypass, so it is out of your signal path entirely when the footswitch is off. The footswitch simply turns the pedal on and off.
How much power does the Keeley Compressor Mini draw?
It runs on a 9V DC pedalboard power supply and draws 10mA of current, which is light enough that it will not strain most isolated supplies. It is designed and built in the USA.
Is the Arctic White Compressor Mini a limited edition?
Yes. At launch the Compressor Mini came in Standard Black Neon and an Arctic White finish limited to the first 1,000 units. Guitar World reported the Arctic White as a limited-edition run of only 1,000 units, priced the same as the black version at $129.
