Kelly Amplification Fuzz Box

Fuzz
Key facts
TypeFuzz box, an early fuzz box provided to the British market1
Advertised price£10 GBP (1966)1
StatusNo known surviving exemplar1

The Kelly Amplification Fuzz Box was an early fuzz pedal supplied to the British market. According to the independent fuzz history site fuzzboxes.org, the company behind it "was apparently also responsible for providing an early fuzz box to the British market"1. Very little is documented about the pedal: it is unknown how many were built and sold, and there is no known surviving exemplar1.

A scarce and uncertain survivor

Very little is documented about the Kelly Fuzz Box, and what is known comes largely from a single advertisement. In 1966, "a very limited advertisement was placed in the music press," signifying that the pedal was reportedly priced at £101. Beyond that advertisement, it is unknown how many were built and sold, and there is not a single known surviving exemplar1.

The pedal's origins are uncertain. Fuzzboxes.org raises two possibilities: that the unit "may have been designed & built by Kelly, and simply marketed by Macari's," or that it was a Macari Sola Sound design rebranded for Kelly1. Macari's, the London music shop family, was connected with several UK fuzz designs of the period, so either reading would tie the Kelly box to the same circle of British makers.

"It is unknown, however, how many were built & sold, and there isn't a single known surviving exemplar."

That last point matters for anyone researching vintage fuzz: the Kelly Fuzz Box is known only from paper records. How many units were built and sold is unknown, and fuzzboxes.org reports that not one surviving example has been documented1. Unlike many 1960s pedals that turn up on the used market and in collectors' rigs, this is a design whose story rests on an advertisement rather than on hardware.

Where it sits among fuzz pedals

The Kelly box belongs to the earliest generation of fuzz pedals, the circuit family that grew through the 1960s into the sustained, distorted sounds players now associate with the effect. Later fuzz designs, such as the KHDK Scuzz Box, a germanium-voiced fuzz pedal described by Guitar World as "powerfully crunchy, ripping and screaming, but clear and present" in Pedal of the Day's review, show how the format the early boxes pioneered was carried forward12.

For a player, the Kelly Fuzz Box is a historical footnote rather than a pedal to hunt down: with no known surviving unit, it stands as evidence of how early and how widely the fuzz idea spread through the British market in 19661.
