The J is a collaboration between pedal maker ThorpyFX and Lazy J, a British boutique guitar amp manufacturer, built to faithfully emulate the tones and response of the Lazy J J 20 amp in a compact pedal format1. Guitar World classifies it as an amp emulation pedal, and it sits in the broader family of overdrive pedals: the intention is to recreate both the sound and the feel of the J 20, a modern evolution of the 1950s 5E3 Fender Deluxe circuit2. It was developed by Adrian Thorpe of ThorpyFX and Jesse Hoff of Lazy J over about four years of collaboration1.

A tweed amp in a pedal

The J 20 amp it emulates is itself inspired by the tweed-clad Fender combos of the 1950s32, and The J carries that lineage into a stompbox. Where most overdrives impose their own clipping character on whatever amp you are playing through, an amp emulation pedal like this aims to put a specific amplifier's preamp behavior on your pedalboard, so the pedal becomes the voice of the amp rather than a layer on top of it.

Guitar.com's reviewer described the result in playing terms:

"I'm greeted with a fat, harmonically rich, very sweet edge-of-breakup up tone"1

He also called it "one of the most organic, touch sensitive and responsive overdrive pedals around"1. Part of that feel comes from the hardware: The J includes a built-in transformer that can mimic the real amp feel1. The enclosure is UV-printed and built to Thorpy's military-grade specs, in a more compact housing than the usual ThorpyFX format1.

Controls and switching

The control set mirrors the spartan layout of the amp it copies1:

ControlWhat it does
NormalVolume for the Normal channel1
BrightVolume for the Bright channel1
ToneSingle tone control1
PresencePresence control1
OutputMaster output1
ResponseResponse control2
SupplyEmulates the J 20's attenuator1
X/Y switchSelects between 12AY7 and 12AX7 valve emulations2

Two footswitches complete the panel: a Channel footswitch that moves between the Normal and Bright channels, and a Bypass footswitch2. Guitar.com's buying guide highlights the footswitchable channels as a key feature4.

The two channels have distinct characters. The Bright channel is a touch brighter and, as you would expect from a tweed-style amp, also more gainy than the Normal channel1. Because each channel has its own volume control, you can set two levels and move between them with your foot, much like jumping channels on the real amp.

The X/Y switch and the Supply control

The X/Y toggle is the pedal's take on a classic tweed tweak. On the real amp, players swap the first preamp valve between a 12AY7, the lower gain original fitment, and a 12AX7 for more drive. The J duplicates that option with a toggle switch that lets you choose between the lower gain 12AY7 or the 12AX7 for more drive if you need it2. Guitar.com describes it as the circuit's impression of either 12AX7 or 12AY7 valves1.

The Supply switch is designed to emulate the J 20's attenuator1. On the amplifier, the attenuator lets the power section be pushed into its sweet spot at reduced volume, and this control brings a similar option to the pedal.

What reviewers said

Both published reviews were positive. Guitar.com's review, published January 14, 2026, gave it a 10/10 rating, calling it "a superb tweed amp emulation that more than lives up to the Lazy J name"21.

"It's a superb tweed amp emulation that more than lives up to the Lazy J name"1

Guitar World's review awarded five stars, noting that it took the combined talents of Adrian Thorpe and Lazy J's Jesse Hoff several years to create The J, and that it does not disappoint2.

Price

Guitar.com listed The J at £329 / $399 in January 20261. Guitar World's review gives the price as £329 (approximately $449)2. The UK price is the same in both; the dollar figures differ, at $399 from Guitar.com and approximately $449 from Guitar World.

Questions

What is the difference between the X and Y modes on The J?

The X/Y toggle selects between the circuit's impression of two different preamp valves. Y mode emulates the lower gain 12AY7, while X mode emulates a 12AX7 for more drive. It duplicates what you could do on the real amp by swapping preamp valves, so you can set the pedal up for a cleaner edge-of-breakup voice or a hotter one.

What does the supply switch on The J do?

The Supply switch is designed to emulate the attenuator on the Lazy J J 20 amplifier. On the real amp the attenuator lets you push the power section into its sweet spot at lower listening levels, and this control brings a similar flavor of that behavior to the pedal.

Can you switch between the normal and bright channels with your foot?

Yes. The J has a dedicated Channel footswitch that moves between the Normal and Bright channels, plus a separate Bypass footswitch. The Bright channel is a touch brighter and more gainy than the Normal channel, and each channel has its own volume control.

How much does the ThorpyFX The J cost?

Guitar.com listed it at £329 / $399 in January 2026. Guitar World's review gave the price as £329 (approximately $449), so the two publications disagree on the US dollar figure. The UK price of £329 is consistent across both.
