The Maneco Labs Grone Drone Synth Classic Version is a drone synth that the maker presents in two roles at once: a drone synth pedal, and a Eurorack module. Maneco Labs describes it as "the ultimate drone synth", and lists Eurorack module among its features, with the product filed under the Modules category on the maker's site1. A drone synth holds a sustained tone for as long as you want it, which players use for drones, beds and textures under everything else on a board or in a case.
What it is and what it does
The Classic Version is one of several Grone formats from Maneco Labs. The maker's page for it carries the title "Pedal: Grone Drone Synth, Classic Version", and its feature list includes Eurorack module1. In practice that means the same drone voice idea is offered in a form that can be mounted in a Eurorack system or used as a pedal, depending on how a player works.
How it compares in the Grone family
The Grone line has three points of comparison a player weighing them up will want:
| Product | Format | List price (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Grone Drone Synth Classic Version | Drone synth pedal and Eurorack module | $395.001 |
| Grone Drone Synth | Drone synth pedal | $465.003 |
| Mini Grone Drone Synth | Eurorack module | $295.004 |
The standard Grone Drone Synth is the pedal at the top of the range, and Maneco Labs lists Clouds among its features2. The Mini Grone Drone Synth is the compact module variant of the Grone Drone Synth: the maker lists a noise generator and a drone voice oscillator among its features, and credits the artwork to Alfonsina González4. The Classic Version, at $395.00, sits between the two in the maker's pricing1.
The Classic Version is listed by the maker under its Modules category, so it is worth checking which format suits your setup before comparing it with pedal-only drone synths such as the Mattoverse Drone Tone MkIII or the Rainger FX MiniDrone.
Where it sits among drone synths
Players looking at the Classic Version alongside other drone and synth pedals can compare it with the Erica Synths Fusion Drone System, the SOMA Laboratory Enner or the Landscape Noon, and with the wider field of Synth Pedals. What sets the Grone family apart in that company is the maker's dual pedal-and-module approach: the same drone voice concept is offered as a pedal, as the Classic Version, and as the smaller Mini Grone module14.
