The Marshall PEDL-90008 is a four-button foot controller for Marshall MG series amplifiers. Rather than a fixed one-button-per-function switch, it is programmable: each of its four buttons can be set up either to switch something on the amp's front panel or to recall a stored preset, and its LEDs report the amp's state back to you on stage1.
In a Sweetwater demo, Nick Bowcott walked through the unit's factory assignments and both of its operating modes, calling it "a really really cool pedal" and one that has been criminally overlooked for decades1.
Switch mode and preset mode
The PEDL-90008 has two ways of working, and the buttons can be mixed and matched between them1.
- Switch mode: any button can be assigned to any switch on the amp's front panel, for example the effects loop1.
- Preset mode: each of the four buttons can store a preset of any channel mode, so you are not limited to one button per channel. Bowcott's example is storing three different cleans across three buttons, plus a tuner on the fourth1.
Out of the box, button 1 switches the clean channel between clean and crunch modes, with a green LED for clean and red for crunch1.
LEDs and on-stage status
Seven LEDs show you exactly what the amp is doing: the active channel, the effects loop state, effects on or off, and tap tempo status. As Bowcott puts it, the benefit is that "when you're on stage you don't have to turn back to see what channel" you are on1.
