The Zeygot Optical Noise Fuzz is a fuzz pedal from Moody Sounds, a company based in Färjestaden, Sweden. It is built on the classic Fuzz Face circuit, but adds something most fuzzes do not have: an optical sensor in the bottom corner of the pedal that you control by moving a hand or foot over it, producing blips, squeaks, pulses and other sounds on top of the fuzz. For players interested in other fuzz designs, the site's Fuzz Pedals page covers the wider field.1
What it does
The controls are simple: Volume and Fuzz knobs, plus the Noise knob that governs the optical sensor. Reviewing the pedal for Pedal of the Day in 2015, Mike B described the range of the Fuzz control1:
"will do both a low, fat, chunky fuzz up to a thick, oozy, warm high-gain fuzz wall"
He also found the Volume control has a lot in reserve: "The Volume on tap here is HUGE, no worries about being heard in any live setting, for sure."1
The optical Noise control
The feature that sets the Zeygot apart from a standard Fuzz Face style fuzz is the Noise knob and the optical sensor it works with. As the Pedal of the Day review put it, "There's an optical sensor in the bottom corner of the Zeygot, and you control it by moving your hand or foot or whatever" over it at varying degrees and speeds to produce blips, squeaks, pulses and other sounds.1
That makes it a hybrid of a conventional fuzz and an experimental sound-shaping tool: the fuzz side works like any other, while the sensor invites hands-free or foot-controlled manipulation in the middle of playing. Players drawn to that kind of interaction may also want to look at Expression Pedals and Filter Pedals, which cover other ways of shaping a sound in real time.
