The MXR Eric Gales EG74 Raw Dawg is a signature overdrive pedal built for the Memphis blues guitarist Eric Gales. It is a mini pedal, small enough to tuck into a crowded board, with the three controls players expect from an overdrive in the Tube Screamer family: Output, Tone and Drive1.
Gales asked for something specific, and Vintage Guitar's reviewer passed along his own description of the circuit1:
"A Tube Screamer with more bite!"
What it does
The Raw Dawg sits in the overdrive camp rather than distortion or fuzz: it pushes an amp or shapes a boosted signal with a degree of grit, in the same broad family as other overdrive pedals MXR makes, such as the Sugar Drive or the GT-OD. Vintage Guitar's reviewer characterized the circuit as a Tube Screamer with more bite, which places it among the many pedals that take the familiar mid-forward Tube Screamer voicing and push it harder1.
Its controls follow the classic arrangement:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Drive | Sets the amount of overdrive |
| Tone | Shapes the treble character |
| Output | Sets the pedal's level1 |
Where it came from
The pedal grew out of a collaboration between Gales and Dunlop, the company behind MXR. According to Vintage Guitar's review, Dunlop got Gales in touch with Jeorge Tripps, of Way Huge pedals, and in a few months Gales had exactly what he wanted1. The enclosure carries an image of Gales' beloved pitbull, Little Bud, which gives the pedal its name and its look1.
MXR has a long line of artist signature drives alongside this one, including the Yngwie Malmsteen Overdrive, the Duke of Tone developed with Analog Man, and the Tom Morello Power 50 Overdrive.
