The left "Dine In" side is Mythos's take on what the maker calls the ever popular ODR sound, while the right "Take Out" side is an updated version of the drive from the Mythos Air Lane Drive / 210 Double Drive pedals1. MusicRadar described the pedal as combining "two classic pedalboard sounds in one housing"2.

Two overdrives in one enclosure

The Extra Hot follows the dual drive format Mythos also used on pedals like the Herculean Deluxe: two independent circuits in one box, each with its own footswitch, so a player can use either side alone or stack them. The two sides here are deliberately different in character132.

The "Dine In" side is an ODR-style overdrive, a family of circuits based on a well known 1990s Nashville drive pedal. The "Take Out" side is a simple single transistor, hard clipped overdrive. Mythos says that side "can be a boost, a low gain drive, to an almost fuzz like dirt pedal," which gives the pedal a wide gain range overall3.

Physically, the pedal is compact for a dual drive. Jacks are mounted on the top of the enclosure rather than the sides, and the knobs are chickenheads2. Top mounted jacks can save width on a pedalboard, since cables run up and down the board rather than out of its sides.

The controls on each side

The two sides are controlled differently, which suits their different jobs.

Take Out (right)Single transistor, hard clipped overdriveFlavor (Gain), Sauce (Volume)1

On the Dine In side, Cut is a tone control and Size is a bass control, which Mythos says "let you shape the voice to fit any setup"1. That matters for players using different amps or guitars, since ODR-style circuits can sound too dark or too thick in some rigs.

On the Take Out side, the Flavor control adjusts the gain and the Sauce control sets the volume1. MusicRadar noted the fire engine red Flavor knob on the Take Out side as the gain control when covering the launch2. With the gain low and the volume up, this side works as a boost; with the gain up, it moves into drive and near fuzz territory.

Extra Hot and the Extra Spicy edition

Mythos also sells an Extra Hot "Extra Spicy" Dual Overdrive, a variant of the same pedal sold exclusively through mythospedals.com and released in occasional batches3.

The Extra Spicy edition is sonically the same pedal with one change: the Size (Bass) control has been updated for more versatility, while the rest of the pedal is unchanged3. The visual difference is bigger. The enclosure uses a black, yellow and orange hot sauce bottle inspired aesthetic, which Mythos compares to the way hot sauce brands dress up their bottles3.

Both versions share the same core specifications: true bypass switching, mono in and out, 9V DC power with no internal battery clip13.

The Extra Spicy edition drops in batches occasionally and is exclusive to mythospedals.com, so it may not be available at any given time3.

Where it came from

Mythos describes the Extra Hot as "the spiritual successor to the Hot Chicken * pedal we made a number of years ago with a handful of changes"1. The updated Extra Hot uses two different circuits than the OG unit3.

The Take Out side's lineage is more specific: it is an updated version of the drive from the Mythos Air Lane Drive / 210 Double Drive pedals, and MusicRadar likewise reported the Take Out side as a modded drive circuit from the Air Lane Drive, with the Dine In side carrying the OBR-style overdrive12.

Questions

Where was the Mythos Extra Hot built to be sold?

The Extra Hot was built exclusively for Carter Vintage Guitars in Nashville, Tennessee, and is available only through that dealer. MusicRadar noted when covering the launch that this makes it hard to find for players who are not near Nashville or shopping that dealer.

Does the Extra Hot Dual Overdrive take a battery?

No. The pedal runs on 9V DC power and has no internal battery clip, so it needs a power supply or a pedalboard power system. Current draw is approximately 10 mA, which is light enough for most isolated supplies and even many daisy chains.

Is the Mythos Extra Hot true bypass?

Yes. Both the Extra Hot Dual Overdrive and the Extra Spicy edition use true bypass switching, so the pedal passes your signal unaltered when both sides are switched off.

Is the Extra Hot stereo?

No. The Extra Hot is a mono pedal with a single input and a single output. Players running stereo rigs would need to place it before a split or use it in one side of the chain.

What is the Extra Hot a successor to?

Mythos describes the Extra Hot as the spiritual successor to the Hot Chicken pedal the company made a number of years ago, with a handful of changes. The updated pedal also uses two different circuits than the original OG unit.

What is different about the Extra Spicy version?

The Extra Spicy edition keeps the same circuits but updates the Size (Bass) control for more versatility, and dresses the enclosure in a black, yellow and orange hot sauce bottle inspired finish. It is sold exclusively through mythospedals.com in occasional batches.
