Mythos Pedals

48 pedals on Tonebox

Mythos Pedals is a small stompbox company based outside Nashville, Tennessee, that builds overdrive, fuzz, delay and boost pedals for guitar players. MusicRadar has described it as a "Nashville-based stompbox company"1, and the company itself says its pedals are "built by musicians who love tone and all things guitar"2. The range runs from Tube Screamer-style overdrives to Big Muff-derived fuzzes, plus a buffer and, since 2021, an analog delay.

The company began as a hobbyist's brand and grew into a full-time business. As Mythos tells it:

"Mythos was started by Zach Broyles in 2010 as a way of branding the builds that he had been making for himself and friends"
, Mythos Pedals2

From a Nashville workbench to a full-time pedal maker

Zach Broyles started Mythos in 2010 to put a name on pedals he was building for himself and friends2. For its first years the operation sat alongside other work, but in late 2017 Broyles made it his living: as the company's own history puts it, "In late 2017 Zach began chasing the Mythos dream and decided to pursue it as a career full time"2. Today it is a small team outside Nashville whose pedals are built by players2.

The company's early catalog was built around dirt pedals, and several of those first circuits have since been retired and replaced. Mythos says it made the Hot Chicken pedal "a number of years ago," along with the Erlking, Air Lane Drive and 210 Double Drive4. The Extra Hot Dual Overdrive now carries that line forward: the company calls it "the spiritual successor to the Hot Chicken pedal we made a number of years ago with a handful of changes"54.

Known for fuzz and overdrive, then the Oracle delay

Mythos built its reputation on dirt boxes, and press coverage of the Oracle noted that the delay was the company's first move beyond gain pedals1. The Envy is an overdrive6, and the AU-79 Fuzz is described by the maker as stacking great with overdrive pedals7. Coverage of the Oracle also traced its circuit lineage to classic analog bucket brigade delays like the Boss DM-2 and the Electro-Harmonix Memory Man, with Mythos's own spin8, and its sound to the somewhat dark, warm character of vintage Japanese echo pedals9. The Oracle itself is a delay pedal with a maximum delay time of 600ms10.

The company's first step outside dirt came in March 2021 with the Oracle Analog Echo, its first delay pedal. It is an all-analog bucket brigade delay designed with John Snyder of Electronic Audio Experiments, built around two reissued MN3205 chips, launched at $259. Guitar.com reviewed it in September 2021 and rated it 9 out of 10, finding that it delivers vintage analog delay tones with modern convenience and calling it a worthy successor to the classics that inspired it. Modulation followed in 2023 with The Fates, the company's first chorus/vibrato pedal, an analog BBD design around the MN3207 chip that launched at $229.

Founder Zach Broyles and collaborators

Zach Broyles founded the company and remains its driving force2. He has also brought in outside designers on specific pedals. The SusMaryOsep V2, a drive/echo pedal, came out of a collaboration with guitarist R.J. Ronquillo: as the company tells it, "In early 2019 R.J. and Zach began tossing ideas around to create a unique drive/echo pedals"11. The Oracle delay's circuit came from John Snyder of Electronic Audio Experiments.

Notable circuits and versions

The company's own history is the clearest guide here. Mythos was started by Zach Broyles in 2010 as a way of branding the builds he had been making for himself and friends, and it is operated by a small team outside Nashville, TN, with pedals built by musicians12. In late 2017 Broyles began chasing the Mythos dream and decided to pursue it as a career full time5.

Several early Mythos pedals, including the Hot Chicken, Erlking, Air Lane Drive, 210 Double Drive and Daedalus, are no longer in the lineup. Their circuits live on in successors such as the Extra Hot and Runestone45.

For players comparing categories, Mythos pedals sit across the overdrive, fuzz, delay, chorus, boost and buffer families, with the Oracle standing as the company's entry into time-based effects.
