The One Control BJF Buffer Split is a small utility box that puts two jobs in one enclosure: it combines the functions of One Control's 1 Loop Box and AB Box, and it carries the BJF Buffer, a buffer circuit designed by Björn Juhl of BJFe1. In practice that means it can route your guitar between two destinations, switch a loop of pedals in and out of the chain, and condition the signal so long cable runs and rows of true bypass pedals do not dull your tone. One Control calls it "an extremely versatile utility box to have on your pedalboard"1.

The unit is currently listed as sold out on One Control's own store, at a sale price of $109.99 USD against a regular price of $137.99 USD, as of October 20261.

A buffer and A/B box in one

The box works as an A/B switcher, selecting between two signal paths1. The buffer side is what sets it apart from a plain A/B box. A buffer is a small amplification stage placed in the signal chain that drives the cable with a low output impedance, so the high-frequency loss and tone dulling caused by long cables and many true bypass pedals in series is reduced.

One Control describes what the BJF Buffer does in player's terms:

"The BJF Buffer will help amplify the signal without changing the apparent volume or distortion, adding some toughness and strength to your sound"2

The same idea shows up across the range. The Minimal Series Pedal Board Junction Box with BJF Buffer is described by One Control as "a small box with two inputs and two outputs which is very simple, but makes a tremendous difference in your sound," with an ultra-low noise output and an input impedance of 500kΩ with the buffer on3. Its BUFFER/PASSIVE switch turns the buffer on and off, and in passive mode no power is needed at all3. It also adds a polarity reverse switch that inverts the phase between the buffer in and out jacks, working only when the buffer switch is on the buffer side3.

Power and current draw

The BJF Buffer Split draws only 3mA, which One Control lists as its consumption current1. That matches the standalone Minimal Series BJF Buffer, also listed at 3mA2. For comparison, other One Control pedals that include the buffer circuit draw more because of their other functions: the Mosquito Blender Trail and Mosquito Blender Expressio are each listed at 12mA45, while the LX Tuner with BJF Buffer draws up to 40mA6.

The standalone Minimal Series BJF Buffer runs on a center-minus DC9V adapter, and One Control states plainly that batteries cannot be used with it2. The Black Loop Deluxe with BJF Buffer is specified at 9V DC center negative8, and the White Loop with BJF Buffer works with a center-negative DC9V adapter9.

One Control's BJF Buffer pedals are adapter powered. On the Minimal Series BJF Buffer, One Control states "Batteries cannot be used"2, so plan for a 9V DC supply on your pedalboard rather than a battery.

Size and price

The BJF Buffer Split measures 101mm deep and weighs 150g1. Its list price is $109.99 USD, shown alongside a regular price of $137.99 USD, and it is currently sold out1. The other Minimal Series units with the BJF Buffer, including the standalone BJF Buffer, the White Loop and the Black Loop, are also sold out5910.

The standalone Minimal Series BJF Buffer was listed at $96.99 USD and is also shown as sold out2.

The BJF Buffer and Björn Juhl

The circuit is named for its designer. Björn Juhl, the founder of BJFe, designed the buffer to address the problems of varied cable lengths and true bypass pedals in the signal chain2. In an interview published on One Control's site, the buffer's history is traced to the start of the collaboration: "We started with the BJF Buffer," and the circuit was then "brought to One Control both as a standalone pedal and featured in the loop switchers"11.

One Control's BJF series is known for putting these circuits in very small housings. As Juhl himself put it12:

"One Control BJF series used an overwhelmingly small housing to provide an effect that has a renowned BJF circuit."12

A key specification of the buffer is its unity gain setting. One Control lists a "Precise Unity Gain setting to 1" for the circuit5, meaning the buffer passes the signal at the same level it receives it, neither boosting nor cutting, while still driving the line. That is what allows it to strengthen a signal without changing the apparent volume or distortion2.

Which other One Control pedals include the BJF Buffer

The BJF Buffer is not confined to the Buffer Split. One Control states that the exact buffer circuit is installed in many of its switchers2, and the range bears this out:

The BJF Buffer circuit is installed in many switchers from One Control, and One Control describes it as one of the most natural-sounding buffers available53. Beyond the loop switchers, the circuit was brought to One Control both as a standalone pedal and featured in the loop switchers11. It also reaches the company's tuners: the LX Tuner is a tuner pedal with buffer67, and the Minimal Series Tuner MKII is a tuner with a built-in BJF Buffer7.

Questions

What does the One Control BJF Buffer Split do?

It is a utility box that combines the functions of One Control's 1 Loop Box and AB Box, so it can route a signal between two paths and switch a loop of pedals in and out, with the BJF Buffer available in the signal path. One Control describes it as an extremely versatile utility box for a pedalboard.

What is unity gain on the BJF Buffer?

Unity gain means the buffer amplifies the signal to precisely the same level it receives, with the gain set to 1. One Control describes the BJF Buffer as having a precise unity gain setting to 1, so it strengthens the signal for long cable runs without changing the apparent volume or distortion.

How much current does the One Control BJF Buffer Split draw?

One Control lists the BJF Buffer Split's consumption current as 3mA. That is a very small draw, comparable to the standalone Minimal Series BJF Buffer, which One Control also lists at 3mA.

How big is the One Control BJF Buffer Split?

One Control lists its size as 101mm deep by 53mm wide by 49mm high, with a weight of 150g. It is a small box that takes up little pedalboard real estate.

Which other One Control pedals include the BJF Buffer?

The BJF Buffer appears across the One Control range: the Minimal Series BJF Buffer standalone pedal, the Pedal Board Junction Box, the White Loop and Black Loop loop switchers, the Black Loop Deluxe, the Mosquito Blender Trail and Mosquito Blender Expressio, and the LX Tuner and Minimal Series Tuner MKII.
