The Oneder Effects HECKBOY Fuzz and Oscillation Device is a mini, no-knob fuzz pedal with a second life as a noise machine: one mode delivers a fuzz sound, the other throws the circuit into self-oscillation. Oneder describes the green mode as "a seriously gnarly, yet harmonically balanced fuzz sound," and the red mode as "emitting a screaming feedback/synthy drone that you must fight through with your guitar playing."1
Two modes: fuzz and self-oscillation
The HECKBOY's two modes are selected on the pedal, and each does a different job1:
- Green mode: the fuzz sound. Oneder says the high gain mod switch makes it "even more versatile/intense."1
- Red mode: self-oscillation, producing a feedback and synth-like drone that the player works against with their own playing.1
Because there are no knobs on the outside, the pedal's settings live in two easily-accessible trimpots, one for volume and one for oscillation behavior.1
Circuit lineage and the Goon Fuzz
Oneder states that the HECKBOY circuit is very similar to its previous releases, the Goon Fuzz and the Fuzzhausen, but with new voicings from the high gain mod switch.1 Players comparing it to those pedals should expect the same family of circuit with a different set of voicings rather than a new design.
Playing the red mode with your guitar
The red mode's feedback responds to the guitar itself. Oneder notes that if you make sure the HECKBOY is not placed after a buffer, you can use your instrument's knobs and switches to control the tone of the feedback.1
A buffer earlier in the signal chain will take away this control. If you want to shape the red mode's feedback from the guitar, keep the HECKBOY before any buffered pedals.
Power
The HECKBOY requires a standard 9V center negative power supply with a 2.1mm barrel connector. The supply is not included, and Oneder recommends an isolated DC power supply.1
Availability
Oneder Effects marks the HECKBOY as discontinued as of 2024 on its product page.1
