The PastFx JFet Fuzz Phaser is a phaser with a fuzz pedal built into one box, made by PastFx as what the company calls "a faithful reproduction of the 1970's Roland AP-7 Jet Phaser." The original AP-7 was, in PastFx's words, "unique for its time, incorporating a fuzz and phase circuit within one pedal," and it could produce "thick swirling phase and faux Leslie rotary speaker effects." PastFx describes the recreation as "capable of unique, sweeping phase tones and biting fuzz."1

From the Roland AP-7 Jet Phaser

The Roland AP-7 Jet Phaser packaged a fuzz and a phase circuit together, and its "jet" sound came from a phase-based effect that could imitate a Leslie rotary speaker. Premier Guitar's reviewer, writing about a modern fuzz-phaser, noted that "Roland packaged phaser and fuzz together in in the AP-7 Jet Phaser."2

PastFx's version keeps that combination but updates the layout. Where the original AP-7 had fewer controls, with the tone simplified into two fixed positions, the PastFx adds a Tone Knob for continuous frequency shaping.13 PastFx also makes a related PastFx Jet Phaser.

The controls

ControlWhat it does
Jet LevelThe fuzz volume1
Tone KnobFrequency shaping, unlike the original's two fixed positions (Bright & Dark)1
ResonanceFeedback for the phase circuit1
Slow knobAdjusts phase speed when the Slow toggle is selected1
Fast / Slow toggleSwitches the phase speed mode1
Phase Depth toggleLow / Deep Phase, or turning the phase off1

The phase circuit uses 8 hand matched JFET transistors, which is where the pedal's name comes from.1

Fuzz and phase separately

A key feature for players who want one or the other: PastFx includes a "Phase Off" setting that "allows the Fuzz to be used independently from the Phase circuit." Combined with the Phase Depth toggle, the pedal can run as a fuzz alone, a phaser alone, or both stacked.1

The Flip Switch Mod

The PastFx JFet Fuzz Phaser differs from the original in its controls: the Tone Knob allows frequency shaping, where the original only offered two fixed tonal positions, Bright and Dark. PastFx describes the pedal as able to achieve thick swirling phase and faux Leslie rotary speaker effects, along with unique sweeping phase tones and biting fuzz.1

Power and practicalities

The pedal runs on industry standard 9VDC with a negative tip 2.1mm connector, drawing approximately 15mA, so a standard center negative supply handles it. The enclosure measures 120 x 94 x 50mm in a 1590BB style box, a common size that sits comfortably on a pedalboard.1

The JFet Fuzz Phaser sits in a family of PastFx reproductions of classic circuits. For other takes on vintage designs, see the PastFx Patriarch and the PastFX M-1-A Stacked Sheep's Head Fuzz, or browse Fuzz Pedals more broadly.

Questions

Can the PastFx JFet Fuzz Phaser run the fuzz without the phaser?

Yes. PastFx includes a unique Phase Off setting that lets you use the fuzz independently from the phase circuit. The Phase Depth toggle switch also allows Low or Deep Phase settings, or turning the phase off entirely, so the pedal can work as a fuzz alone, a phaser alone, or both together.

What does the Flip Switch Mod do?

The Flip Switch Mod is a black push button at the base of the enclosure that swaps the function of the Jet Footswitch. It is a PastFx addition to the original AP-7 design, documented in the company's 2021 manual for the Jet Phaser.

Is the PastFx JFet Fuzz Phaser true bypass?

Yes. The pedal has a True Bypass Normal / effect footswitch, so the circuit is removed from your signal chain when the effect is off. The Jet Footswitch separately switches the Jet Fuzz section.

What power does the PastFx JFet Fuzz Phaser need?

It runs on industry standard 9VDC with a negative tip 2.1mm connector, drawing approximately 15mA. That is a standard center negative pedal supply, so most common power supplies will run it.

What size is the enclosure?

The pedal measures 120 x 94 x 50mm and uses a 1590BB style enclosure, a common Hammond box size that fits standard pedalboards.
