The Providence Bass Boot Comp BTC-1 is a bass compressor pedal made by Providence, a Japanese effects maker. Providence describes it as a "multifunctional compressor like a rack-mount typed one", with an LED indicator that lets you judge the gain reduction level by sight1. Gain reduction is how much the pedal is turning the signal down; on a compressor, seeing it at a glance tells you how hard the pedal is working without listening for it.
A MIX control sets it apart from many simple compressors: it lets you blend the compressed signal with the uncompressed one, the parallel compression approach bass players often use to keep the attack of the notes while evening out the level. Providence also lists THRESHOLD, ATTACK and SUSTAIN controls alongside the usual output LEVEL1.
Controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| LEVEL | Output level |
| ATTACK | Attack of the compressed sound |
| SUSTAIN | Amount of compression and sustain |
| MIX | Blend of compressed and uncompressed signal |
| THRESHOLD | Level at which compression starts |
The five controls come from Providence's product page, which lists them together as the pedal's full control set1.
Power and practical details
The BTC-1 runs on a 9V battery or an AC adaptor through its DC9V input jack1. Providence lists power consumption as approximately 25mA at DC9V with the effect turned on1. The pedal measures 115mm deep and weighs approximately 230g without a battery1.
Providence lists the BTC-1 as a bass compressor, but its control set, including the MIX blend, is the kind bass players and guitarists both use for parallel compression. Providence also makes a guitar-oriented compressor, the Providence Velvet Comp VLC-1. For more on how compressors work and how they differ, see Compressor Pedals.
