The RayGun FX Dual Fat Drive is a dual overdrive and boost pedal: a clean booster and an overdrive in one enclosure, with two independent channels that can be used separately or combined1. Pedal of the Day's reviewer, Mike B, described it as a well-built two-in-one pedal that puts two distinct tones in a small footprint1.

Controls

Each side of the pedal keeps things simple: a Volume knob sets the output level and a Gain knob sets the amount of drive. The four knobs are laid out as Vol and Gain for the left side, then Vol and Gain for the right1. The related Acetone F.A.T. Dual Drive design uses the same approach, with independent Drive and Volume controls on each channel for setting gain level and output level per channel2.

Right sideVolOutput level for that channel
Right sideGainAmount of drive for that channel

Because the channels are independent, a common setup is to run one side as a clean boost into the other as an overdrive, pushing it harder than either side could on its own. For more on how boost and drive pedals differ, see Boost Pedals and Overdrive Pedals.

Sound and use

RayGun FX positions the pedal for both guitar and bass; Mike B called it "Ideal for Guitar or Bass"1. On the sound, his review said: "you get a really warm and organic distorted tone, not too much and not too hot, just a great tube amp-like sound" when the Gain knobs are cranked1.

"This is a pretty basic 2-in-1 pedal, but a well-built and great-sounding one."

Power and connections

The Dual Fat Drive runs from a 9V DC input1. It is a mono pedal throughout, with a mono jack input and a mono jack output, so it slots into a standard signal chain without any stereo routing1.

The pedal is mono in and out. It will not send a stereo signal to two amps or a stereo rig.

Questions

Can the two channels of the RayGun FX Dual Fat Drive be used together?

Yes. The pedal has two independent channels that can be combined, so you can run one side as a clean boost into the other as an overdrive, or set up two different drive tones and switch between them. Each side has its own Volume and Gain controls, so the level and amount of drive can be set separately for each channel.

Does the RayGun FX Dual Fat Drive work with bass?

According to Pedal of the Day's review, the pedal is ideal for guitar or bass. Its clean boost side in particular suits bass players who want to push an amp or add level without changing their core tone, while the overdrive side can add a warm, tube amp-like edge to a bass signal.

What power supply does the Dual Fat Drive use?

The pedal takes a 9V DC input. Use a standard center-negative 9V DC supply of the kind used by most compact pedals, and check the current draw requirements before sharing a supply with other pedals on a daisy chain.

Is the RayGun FX Dual Fat Drive mono or stereo?

The Dual Fat Drive is a mono pedal. It has a mono jack input and a mono jack output, so it fits a standard guitar or bass signal chain with a single input and a single output to the amp or the next pedal.
