The Reuss Wine and Roses is a dual distortion pedal made by Reuss Effects, built as a signature pedal for Steve Wynn of The Dream Syndicate. Wynn partnered with Copenhagen-based pedal builder Anders Reuss on the design, which bears the name of the album it celebrates, Days of Wine and Roses.1

Two circuits in one box

The Wine and Roses is based on two of Reuss's most popular pedals: the Old Black Shoe overdrive/distortion and the Germanium Dirt. Having both circuits in one enclosure means a player can run them separately or stack them, and Maiolo of Delicious Audio reported that "they stack amazingly well, and the end result is a pedal that can be set to combine boost, overdrive, distortion, and even basic fuzz depending on the settings of each circuit."1

That range puts the pedal across several familiar effect types at once: it can act as a boost, an overdrive, a distortion, or lean toward fuzz territory1.

Vintage parts

Reuss loads the pedal with two vintage LM308 opamps and six vintage germanium diodes, which Reuss selects from boxes of new old stock components.1

The artwork

The graphics on the enclosure mimic the recognizable artwork of the Days of Wine and Roses album, tying the pedal's look directly to the record it celebrates.1

Steve Wynn's take

Wynn has used the pedal on tour and described it in plain terms1:

"I just used it on another tour and it really is my favorite Swiss Army knife for the pedalboard"

Availability

The pedal is available through Reuss dealers and directly from Reuss Effects's website, and Wynn has also sold them at the merch table at his shows.1

Reuss has continued the signature-pedal approach with other artists, including the Reuss Plasmatron built with Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai.1

Questions

Who designed the Reuss Wine and Roses?

Steve Wynn partnered with Anders Reuss, a pedal builder based in Copenhagen, to create the Wine and Roses. Reuss Effects builds the pedal, and Wynn has used it on tour, calling it his favorite Swiss Army knife for the pedalboard. It is a signature pedal bearing the name of the album it celebrates.

Which Reuss pedals is the Wine and Roses based on?

The Wine and Roses is a dual distortion pedal based on two of Reuss's most popular pedals: the Old Black Shoe overdrive/distortion and the Germanium Dirt. Each circuit sits in the same enclosure, and the two can be stacked together.

Does the Wine and Roses use germanium diodes?

Yes. Reuss loads the pedal with two vintage LM308 opamps and six vintage germanium diodes, which Reuss selects from boxes of new old stock parts. Vintage components of this kind are a deliberate part of the pedal's design.

Can the Wine and Roses sound like a fuzz?

According to Delicious Audio's Alex Maiolo, the two circuits stack remarkably well, and the pedal can be set to combine boost, overdrive, distortion, and even basic fuzz depending on the settings of each circuit.

Where can you buy the Reuss Wine and Roses?

Why does the Wine and Roses have Days of Wine and Roses artwork?

The pedal is named after The Dream Syndicate's album Days of Wine and Roses, and the graphics on the enclosure mimic that album's recognizable artwork. It was launched around the album's 25th anniversary.
