The REVV Shawn Tubbs Tilt is an analog overdrive pedal with a built-in boost circuit, made by Revv Amplification and designed with Nashville session guitarist Shawn Tubbs12. It is the Canadian company's first dual-sided effect pedal, split into two sections, Overdrive and Boost, each with its own footswitch so they can be activated isolated from each other3. The drive side is a touch-sensitive, amp-voiced overdrive that aims to mimic a vintage amplifier, while the boost side carries a Tilt EQ for quick tone shaping and about 12dB of level on tap43.

RockBoard's PedalPedia describes the pedal as the tonal culmination of a lifetime in music, with Tubbs aiming to combine the greatest vintage amp tones and recorded guitar sounds of all time into one ideal sound1. It launched at NAMM 2022 and was available from late May 2022 for $26935.

An overdrive and a boost in one pedal

The Tilt is a medium gain drive pedal with a boost, and the two halves work independently43. The Overdrive section is listed by Revv as a touch-sensitive amp-voiced drive that aims to mimic a vintage amplifier3. Performer Mag's reviewer, Chris Devine, found the drive side voiced like a tube amp when engaged, with a clear vintage slant, though he noted it is not an amp-in-the-box design4. Maxing out the gain, in his view, brings the sound into the classic "Union Jack" zone while still responding to the player's attack4.

The boost side is where the pedal gets its name. It offers a single Tilt EQ that can be used to quickly shape the tone at the desired boost setting5, shifting the frequency behavior in one direction, toward a cleaner sound or more bass and less high end3. Performer Mag described it as 12dB of "more" on tap, with its own independent level control4.

"It's an overdrive pedal with a boost circuit that has a really cool kind of Tilt EQ and some tweaks on it."
Shawn Tubbs, speaking to MusicRadar2

The pedal runs on a standard 9V DC center negative supply drawing 35mA1, and it includes an internal 18V mod for more headroom, so the circuit operates at higher voltage internally while the player powers it with a common 9V supply2. Both sides use silent relay switching3.

The controls

The two sides of the pedal have separate control sets, and a three-way Tight selector and a hold function add further options243.

VolumeOverdriveSets the output level
BassOverdriveLow-end shaping, part of the 2-band EQ
TrebleOverdriveHigh-end shaping, part of the 2-band EQ

TILTEQBoostTonal shaping; fully left is quite bright, turning clockwise adds lows while cutting high end

The drive side has Gain, Volume, Bass and Treble controls2, with gain, volume and a 2-band EQ section with Treble and Bass knobs3. The three-way Tight selector offers Half, Normal and Full settings, where Full is the most amount of low end and Normal and Half cut it back from there2. On the boost side, the TILTEQ knob does the tonal shaping: set all the way to the left it is quite bright, and as it is turned clockwise it adds lows while cutting high end4.

One extra function is worth knowing: holding down the drive footswitch for 1.5 seconds turns off both the boost and drive functions at the same time4.

History and versions

The Tilt Overdrive is a collaboration between Shawn Tubbs and Revv4, developed over the course of a year2. Revv unveiled it at NAMM 2022 as the company's first signature pedal and first dual-sided effect, available from late May 2022 for $2693. MusicRadar's coverage at launch gave a UK price of £2595.

Tubbs is a Nashville session ace and YouTube tone-lord, as MusicRadar put it, and Revv's first signature product with him51. Guitar World later reported that Tubbs discovered many players using the pedal had become enamored with its boost side, with some foregoing the overdrive altogether and others running the boost always on6. That interest led Revv to release the Revv Tilt, a standalone boost pedal based on the Tilt's boost circuit, launched at NAMM 2023.

What reviewers said

Performer Mag's Chris Devine reviewed the pedal in February 2023 and listed its pros as clear, refined, articulate sound that reacts to playing, great drive tones and plenty of tweakability, with no cons listed4.

On That Pedal Show, in an episode comparing do-it-all overdrives, Mick Taylor found something to watch for in the gain structure: the Tilt has a presence that is hard to dial back a hair, sitting either all the way up and too much or backed off noticeably7.

"there's a presence to the Tilt then I find it really hard to um it's either all the way up and it's too much"
Mick Taylor, That Pedal Show7

That Pedal Show's episode used the Revv Tilt Shawn Tubbs Overdrive as one of the comparison pedals, alongside the Poly Flat V, Kernom Ridge and CB Automatone Preamp MKII7.

Questions

Is the REVV Tilt true bypass?

Revv does not describe the Tilt as true bypass. The pedal uses silent relay switching for both the overdrive and boost sections, which lets each side be engaged or bypassed without a pop or click in the signal.

Can the Tilt run at 18V?

Not from an external supply. The pedal runs on a 9V DC center negative power supply, but it includes an internal 18V mod that doubles the internal operating voltage for more headroom, so the player gets the benefit of 18V while powering it at 9V.

How much current does the REVV Tilt draw?

The Tilt draws 35mA, which is modest by modern pedal standards. A typical isolated power supply with 100mA or more per output will run it comfortably, and the draw leaves plenty of room on a shared output for other low-current pedals.

Does the Tilt sound like a Marshall Plexi?

The drive is voiced like a tube amp with a clear vintage slant, and its inspiration runs from Fender Tweed era amps through Marshall JTM and Plexi units. Reviewers found a vintage character rather than a specific amp-in-the-box copy, with max gain reaching a classic Union Jack zone.

Can you use the boost side of the Tilt on its own?

Yes. The pedal is divided into Overdrive and Boost sections, each with its own footswitch, so they can be activated isolated from each other. Guitar World reported that some players ran the boost side always on, and others skipped the overdrive altogether.
