Kernom RIDGE

OverdriveAnalog
List price
$299

The Kernom RIDGE is a multi overdrive pedal from the French company Kernom, first launched on Kickstarter in October 2021 and funded in two hours1. Instead of offering a switch between a handful of fixed drive modes, its central MOOD knob morphs continuously between drive characters, from clean boost through transparent overdrive to high-gain distortion, in a single sweep2.

What makes that possible is what Kernom calls its augmented analog approach. The clipping stage is built from 18 analog diodes in an array, and their clipping behavior, the overdrive character, is determined by digitally controlled bias applied across that array3. Kernom says this architecture is quite different from other brands: it controls the physical behavior of the diodes rather than switching between circuits or using digital modeling, and the clipping stage remains 100% pure analog4. Delicious Audio described the result as "a virtually infinite number of clipping options: symmetric, asymmetric, high headroom, very compressed"5.

An overdrive that morphs between clipping styles

The MOOD knob is the heart of the pedal. Kernom describes it as more than a gain control: it seamlessly morphs between iconic drive styles6. Guitar World's launch coverage explained that turning it from left to right takes you from high headroom, clean boost territory to highly compressed overdrive clipping behavior7. Delicious Audio called it "a continuous control that recreates an infinite number of different 'clipping flavors'"5.

Kernom maps four reference points along the sweep62:

MOOD positionCharacter
1Ultra-dynamic clean boost, like an RC Booster, adds clarity and headroom without coloring tone
2Transparent and organic overdrive, Klon-inspired warmth, for pushing an amp into breakup
3Expressive mid-boost overdrive, Tube Screamer punch without excessive midrange honk
4Articulated high-gain monster, adds sustain and compression for lead tones that cut through

Pedal of the Day's reviewer summed up the range as "From Klon-like transparency to Tube Screamer warmth, from bluesy edge-of-breakup tones to modern high-gain saturation"2.

The controls

The Ridge carries six knobs plus two footswitches. MusicRadar's reviewer noted the two footswitches turn the pedal on and off and recall a single saved preset8.

ControlWhat it does
MOODMorphs the clipping character from clean boost to high-gain distortion67
DriveSets the drive level7
VolumeSets the output level7
PRE TONEAdjusts how the signal hits the drive circuit, fat and compressed versus open and dynamic; sits before the clipping stage and sets brightness659
POST TONEAn extra gain stage placed after the clipping one5
MIDTweak crucial midrange frequencies5

On the EQ, Kernom says that with the knobs at noon the PRE/POST TONE and MID knobs are entirely flat and the Ridge becomes, in the maker's words, "the most transparent overdrive on the market"10. Delicious Audio framed the choice as ultimate transparency at any grit level with the three EQ knobs at noon, or coloring the sound with the EQ section5.

On That Pedal Show, Mick Taylor and Dan Steinhardt walked through the pre-tone idea: "the pre-tone is pre the clipping stage how bright it is"9.

Presets, MIDI and expression

The Ridge stores one onboard preset, recalled by the dedicated preset footswitch, which gives you two sounds at any given time; holding the preset footswitch for 2 seconds saves the current knob positions65. Over MIDI, up to 128 presets are accessible, with MIDI in and out giving full control over all parameters61.

There is also an expression pedal input, assignable to morph between two drive settings or any combination of knobs in real time6. Delicious Audio noted an expression pedal can adjust drive level, boost mids, or blend two different tones together5. For players building a modern rig, this puts the Ridge among MIDI pedals rather than simple three-knob overdrives.

Power

The Ridge cannot run on batteries4. It needs a 9V DC center negative supply delivering 250mA minimum, with 300mA or more recommended, and the adaptor is not included6. That current draw rules out sharing a simple daisy chain with low-current analog pedals. The pedal is protected against power supply inversion10.

History and versions

Kernom later applied the same augmented analog idea to other effects: Guitar World noted in 2023 that the Ridge "did for overdrives" what the Moho Magmatic Fuzz Station did for fuzz, and judged the Ridge a resounding commercial success11.

What reviewers said

Reviews have been consistently positive:

  • MusicRadar (2026): "Delivers many classic overdrive circuits in a single pedal," with some of the best build quality the reviewer had encountered and a really useful EQ section8.
  • Guitar World (Trevor Curwen, 2026): "A truly chameleon-like overdrive pedal that can provide everything from clean boost upwards, the Ridge gives you a massive range of options in shaping your sound with practical facilities for onstage use"12.
  • Pedal of the Day (2026): The reviewer had been really impressed by Kernom's earlier Elipse and Moho pedals, and described the Ridge as a wide-ranging multi overdrive with seamless morphing between legendary overdrive styles2.
  • That Pedal Show (2022): Mick and Dan said it is "really great and that's just like one percent of what it can do we've been really really impressed with that," noting they got a long way toward the TS808 sound13.

Kernom backs the pedal with a non-transferrable limited warranty, repairing or replacing at no cost to the original purchaser within the warranty period, and offers a 30-day return policy10.

Questions

Can the Kernom Ridge run on a battery?

No. The Ridge runs on a 9V DC center negative power supply only, with 250mA minimum and 300mA or more recommended, and the adaptor is not included. There is no battery option, so it needs a proper pedalboard power supply.

Does the Kernom Ridge use diodes or modeling?

Neither, in the usual sense. The clipping stage is 100% analog and built around 18 analog diodes in an array, but their clipping behavior is set by digitally controlled bias across the array. Kernom describes this as controlling the physical behavior of the diodes rather than switching circuits or using digital modeling.

Is the Kernom Ridge true bypass?

Yes. The Ridge uses true bypass with electromechanical relay switching, so with the pedal off your signal passes through without active processing.

Can you use the Kernom Ridge with bass or synths?

Yes. The Ridge has adaptive input gain selectable between instrument level and line level, which Kernom says makes it usable with guitar, bass, synths and vocals. Input impedance is 1Meg Ohm in guitar mode and 32k Ohm in line mode.

Where is the Kernom Ridge made?

In France. Delicious Audio reports that Kernom products are manufactured in a state of the art factory in France that also works on medical projects, a field where precision standards are high.

What is the Blood Rust Kernom Ridge?

A limited edition finish. The standard Ridge ships in Summit White, but Kernom also made a limited run in Blood Rust, a more brown rust/red color, which was made available to Kickstarter backers of the original 2021 campaign.
