Roger That Electronics Roger That Distortion MKII

Distortion

The Roger That Distortion MKII is a distortion pedal from Roger That Electronics, a Dutch boutique manufacturer. It is a high gain design: the maker describes it as built to have "a clear high gain sound, an aggressive attack, low noise and a wide audio spectrum"1.

Circuit and design

The pedal is built around multiple stages of JFET clipping, a high pass filter and an OPAMP based BODY BOOST1. JFET clipping is a way of shaping distortion using transistor stages rather than diodes, an approach boutique builders often use when they want a distortion voice with more of the character of an overdriven amplifier. The high pass filter tightens the low end going into the clipping stages, and the OPAMP based BODY BOOST brings low end weight back afterward.

The RogerThat Distortion was created in cooperation with guitarist, producer and mixing artist John McRIS1.

What it does for a player

As a high gain distortion, the MKII sits on the heavier end of the drive family, alongside overdrive pedals and fuzz pedals, but with a design brief aimed at clarity and low noise rather than raw saturation. The combination of JFET clipping stages, a high pass filter and a body boost circuit points to a pedal intended to keep a wide frequency range while still delivering an aggressive attack1.
