The Spaceman Effects Charon is a germanium/silicon hybrid fuzz pedal with vintage vibes, inspired by what Spaceman calls "classic circuits from the golden age of guitar effects." It mixes a NOS germanium transistor with silicon elements in one hybrid circuit, and it carries three voicing modes, Combust, Spark and Briquet, alongside three knobs: Gain, Tone and Level1.

Spaceman describes the Charon as "a cutting and intense germanium/silicon hybrid fuzz" that traverses from low-gain crunchy overdrive to a menacing aggressive wall of sound, all the way to total signal destruction1. The design mirrors the primal simplicity of early fuzz classics, but with an updated approach to noise reduction, bypass switching and modern production techniques2.

The Charon is sold out at Spaceman's store, and its input impedance is moderately low at 100K ohms, which makes the pedal sensitive to signal-chain placement. Spaceman says it performs best placed first in line1.

How the circuit works

The Charon is a hybrid fuzz: its circuit includes diodes with both germanium and silicon elements, along with a NOS germanium transistor2. Delicious Audio, covering the pedal, explained the thinking behind the build:

"The Charon's design and execution was inspired by vintage fuzzes from the golden age of guitar effects."
Delicious Audio, on the Charon's design brief2

The careful balancing of the germanium and silicon components is what lets the pedal produce what Delicious Audio called "a remarkable variety of tones with just three knobs," from subtle crunch through gnarliness up to a wall of sound2. Spaceman itself frames the pedal as vintage in spirit but modern in execution, with updated noise reduction and true-bypass relay switching rather than the switching schemes of the originals it draws on1.

The controls: Gain, Tone and Level

Three knobs set the whole pedal, and each covers a wide range3.

ControlWhat it does
GainRegulates the signal level into the circuit. Lower settings give a crunchy, smoky tone with a well-defined note attack; medium gain adds compression and bloom; full gain is a rude, belligerent fuzz with accentuated sag and heavy beating intermodulation1
ToneReduces bass content as it is turned up, allowing the Charon to remain tight and defined even at high gain settings1
LevelManages the overall output volume, with plenty of cut and boost on tap1

The Gain knob is where the pedal's range lives. Spaceman's own description runs from smoky low-gain drive through blooming medium-gain compression to full belligerent fuzz with sag and intermodulation, which is the behavior reviewers also found: Delicious Audio described the same traverse from low-gain crunchy overdrive to total signal destruction12.

The three modes: Combust, Spark and Briquet

A mode switch selects between three voices, each with its own character as Spaceman describes it1.

ModeSpaceman's description
CombustCompressed blooming fuzz that relentlessly chases your fingers1
SparkHarmonically complex distortion with a claustrophobic broken midrange1
BriquetSmoldering drive that hovers around the surface1

The three modes sit on top of the Gain, Tone and Level controls, so the same knob settings behave differently in each voice. Combust is the compressed, blooming end of the pedal; Spark pushes toward broken midrange distortion; Briquet backs off into lower-gain smoldering drive territory, closer to an overdrive than a full fuzz1.

What reviewers said

"this one gets the harmonious blend of transistors just right - for a really well balanced and richly textured tone."
Stefan Karlsson, Guitar Pedal X4

He also found the Charon "beautifully balanced and with a really smart tone stack to get the maximum harmonics out of that" germanium/silicon mix, and named it one of his favorite hybrid Ge/Si fuzzes of 202334. Delicious Audio's coverage echoed the range, noting the pedal's traverse from low-gain crunchy overdrive to total signal destruction with smoky drive, fat saturated distortion and belligerent fuzz along the way2.

Karlsson's review also touched on a practical point for players building a board around the Charon: its input impedance is moderately low at 100K ohms, which makes the pedal sensitive to where it sits in the signal chain, and it performs best placed first in line1.

The Charon v2 Mod

Spaceman has since released the Charon v2 Mod, described as "a brand new take on the original circuit" and a re-imagined version of the Charon5. Where the original balances its germanium and silicon elements, Spaceman says the v2 Mod gives "the germanium given the upper hand for significantly more texture and dynamic interaction," taking it from a mild-mannered fuzzstortion to what the maker calls "a real ripper of a fuzz, full of character"5. The v2 Mod also adjusts the LOWS control for more pronounced control over the low-frequency-focused tone control of the original5. Like the original, the v2 Mod is sold out at Spaceman's store5.

Build and power

The Charon is a compact pedal, measuring 2.60 inches wide, 4.73 inches deep and 2.17 inches tall, and weighing 10.5 ounces1. It runs on 9V DC, negative center, through a 2.1mm jack, and draws 8.9mA in bypass1. The signal path is all analog1.

Questions

Is the Spaceman Charon true bypass?

Yes. The Charon uses true-bypass relay switching with a soft-touch footswitch, so the pedal's all-analog circuit is fully out of the signal path when disengaged. Spaceman describes this as part of its updated approach to bypass switching compared with the vintage fuzzes that inspired the design.

Is the Spaceman Charon still available?

No. Both the original Charon and the re-imagined Charon v2 Mod are listed as sold out on Spaceman Effects' own product pages. The original carried a list price of $199.00. In 2023 a UK reviewer noted the pedal was not available in the UK at all and had to be ordered from a US dealer.

Where is the Spaceman Charon made?

The Charon is built and hand-wired in Portland, Oregon, by Spaceman Effects. It sits in a cast-aluminum enclosure with a durable, engraved vinyl faceplate and a jewel indicator light, and weighs 10.5 ounces.

What do the Combust, Spark and Briquet modes sound like?

Spaceman describes Combust as a compressed blooming fuzz that relentlessly chases your fingers, Spark as harmonically complex distortion with a claustrophobic broken midrange, and Briquet as smoldering drive that hovers around the surface. Together they take the pedal from low-gain crunchy overdrive to a wall of sound and total signal destruction.
