VersionsSFT and AC1

The Steelphon 'Pep' Fuzz is a vintage fuzz pedal from Italian maker Steelphon. It was produced in two versions, SFT and AC, and Paolo De Gregorio, writing on Delicious Audio, described the pedal as "an just an awesome box" sound-wise1.

The two versions

The two versions of the Pep are not identical. De Gregorio noted that "there is a bit of difference between its two versions," and the difference is one players will hear immediately1.

VersionCharacter
SFT"a much angrier, louder and an all around more fuzzy fuzz"1
AC"lower gain, more gated, and bit fatter on the low end"1

Where it sits

Circuit-wise, the Pep belongs to a recognizable family. De Gregorio placed it "somewhere in the Elka Dizzytone / Burns Buzzaround camp, but with some added grit," which puts it among the buzzy, aggressive fuzzes of its era rather than the smoother overdrive or distortion styles1.
