Surfy Industries SurfyTrem Deluxe

TremoloAnalog
Key facts
TypeAnalog tremolo pedal, described by the maker as 100% analog and based on bias modulation1
Power9 to 12V DC, 30mA1

The SurfyTrem Deluxe is a tremolo pedal from Surfy Industries, the Italian maker best known for its analog spring reverb units. It is built to recreate the sound of the famous "vibrato channel" of vintage Fender amplifiers, and it puts both of the tremolo circuits Fender used across the early 1960s in one pedal: the harmonic tremolo of the brownface amps and the amplitude tremolo of the blackface amps12.

Surfy Industries describes the effect as 100% analog, and as one of very few tremolos based on bias modulation, the scheme the maker links to its well-known vintage amp references1. The pedal runs on a supply voltage range of 9 to 12V DC at 30mA1.

What it does: Fender amp tremolo in two voices

The pedal's two modes are named after the Fender panel styles whose tremolo circuits they copy213.

ModeTremolo typeWhat it does to the sound
BrownfaceHarmonic (bias modulation)Signal floats on the harmonic wave, alternating highs and lows; Surfy Industries compares it to a rotating Leslie speaker1
BlackfaceAmplitude modulationSignal is moved alternately in and out, an on/off feeling that is more efficient and audible, and cuts through the mix easily and loudly1

The Brownface mode is modeled on the second channel of a Fender 1961-1962 Showman amplifier. Surfy Industries describes this voice as having a great feature: dynamic adaptability, meaning it is rich and deep on slow melodies and almost absorbed during aggressive, loud playing while keeping the full attack of the notes13.

The Blackface mode is the more familiar kind of tremolo, the amplitude modulation well known since the 1950s in which the signal is moved alternately in and out. Surfy Industries says this voice really stands out when needed and cuts through the mix easily and loudly23.

"Bias modulation was used in many vintage Fender amps and is now recreated by using matched JFET transistors."

Controls, stereo and power

The Deluxe carries a volume control for adjusting the signal level when the tremolo is enabled, which Delicious Audio describes as useful for making up gain or boosting12. Switching is true bypass, so the signal passes untouched when the pedal is off12.

The stereo section is where the Deluxe goes beyond a standard tremolo:

  • Full stereo in and out2
  • Mono in / stereo out pans the tremolo effect from left to right2
  • The pedal can be used as two separate tremolos sharing the same LFO, or for creating stereo effects from a mono source1

Power is flexible. The pedal accepts an extended supply range of 9 to 12V DC at 30mA, and its polarity auto detection means it works with power supplies of either center-positive or center-negative polarity12.

The original SurfyTrem and its DIY kit were built without true bypass on purpose. Surfy Industries notes the original Showman amp did not have true bypass either: bypass was achieved by just stopping the oscillator, and the maker kept that behavior to preserve the vintage tone change. The Deluxe switches to true bypass34.

Where it came from

Surfy Industries describes the SurfyTrem Deluxe as 100% analog and as one of very few tremolos based on bias modulation, an approach the maker ties to its well-known vintage amp references1.

The pedal's power section accepts an extended supply voltage range of 9 to 12V DC at 30mA1.

How it differs from the original SurfyTrem

The SurfyTrem and the Deluxe share the same analog amplitude and harmonic tremolo circuits, the black-panel and brown-panel Fender modes2. The differences are practical:

BypassNo true bypass, kept intentionally to preserve the vintage tone change3True bypass12
StereoNot full stereoFull stereo in and out; mono in / stereo out pans left to right2

Questions

Is the SurfyTrem Deluxe true bypass?

Yes. The Deluxe uses true bypass switching, a change from the original SurfyTrem, which Surfy Industries deliberately built without true bypass to preserve the vintage tone change of the old Fender amps it models. When the Deluxe is off, your signal passes straight through untouched.

What is the difference between harmonic and amplitude tremolo?

Harmonic tremolo, the Brownface mode, alternates highs and lows so the signal floats on the wave, something Surfy Industries compares to a rotating Leslie speaker, and it adapts dynamically to your playing. Amplitude tremolo, the Blackface mode, moves the whole signal in and out with an on/off feeling that cuts through a mix easily and loudly.

Can the SurfyTrem Deluxe run on 12V?

Yes. The pedal accepts an extended supply range of 9 to 12V DC at 30mA, so a standard 9V pedalboard supply or a 12V supply will both work. The original SurfyTrem DIY kit could also run from a 9V battery, though that kit was discontinued in 2019.

How does the SurfyTrem Deluxe differ from the original SurfyTrem?

The Deluxe, introduced in 2022, keeps the same analog amplitude and harmonic tremolo circuits but adds full stereo in and out, true bypass switching, a volume control for making up gain or boosting, and a slightly bigger casing. The original SurfyTrem had no true bypass by design.

Does the SurfyTrem Deluxe work with a center-positive power supply?

Yes. The Deluxe has polarity auto detection, so it works with power supplies of either center-positive or center-negative polarity. You do not need a special cable or adapter to match your supply to the pedal.
