Surfy Industries

10 pedals on Tonebox

Surfy Industries is an Italian effects company, operating as Surfy Industries SRL, that has built its reputation on one idea: putting the reverb and tremolo sounds of vintage brownface Fender amplifiers into standalone units a player can put on a pedalboard or a studio shelf123. Its best-known products are the SurfyBear family of spring reverb units, which the maker describes as fully analog circuits built around real spring reverb pans rather than digital emulation145.

All 10 Surfy Industries pedals

The company's range covers the SurfyBear reverb family, tremolo pedals, other effects and accessories1. What ties much of it together is the brownface Fender amplifier sound: Surfy Industries describes its products, including the SurfyBear reverb family and the Blossom Point, as aimed at players looking for the sound quality of a brownface Fender amplifier3.

The SurfyBear reverb family

The SurfyBear line is the core of the brand. Surfy Industries is direct about what these units are:

"This is NOT a digital effect and it incorporates a real spring reverb pan."

The family spans several formats, from full-size units to compact pedals:

Surfy Industries calls the SurfyBear Classic its top-of-the-line product and describes it as today's market leader among spring reverb units7. The Studio Edition's manual confirms the same analog approach applies across the line, and its warranty terms cover the whole unit, pans and power adapters included, for the first 90 days10.

The SurfyPan reverb pan

A central piece of the SurfyBear story is the SurfyPan, the company's own reverb pan. Surfy Industries developed it working with Belton/Accutronics, and describes it as closer to the sound and decay of the original Gibbs pans from the early 1960s, the pans used in the vintage Fender reverb circuits the company emulates6. The flagship SurfyBear models carry a SurfyPan EXTRA type-4 pan, while the Compact models use an original Accutronics type-8 pan698.

Because these are real spring pans, they behave like real spring pans. Inside a SurfyBear, the pan connects to the circuit board with two RCA plugs, which can come loose from transportation or excessive shaking, and Surfy Industries' own support material treats reseating them as a routine service step5.

Tremolo and the brownface sound

The other half of the brownface Fender sound is tremolo. The SurfyTrem and SurfyTrem Deluxe are both built to recreate the sound of the famous "vibrato channel" of vintage Fender amplifiers1112. In brownface mode, both offer a harmonic tremolo voice modeled on the second channel of a Fender 1961-1962 Showman, in which the signal floats on the harmonic wave, alternating highs and lows, a sound Surfy Industries compares to a rotating Leslie speaker1112.

The Surfy-Man combines reverb with the company's SurfyTrem brownface/blackface tremolo selection in one unit3. The range also extends beyond reverb and tremolo, with the SurfyVibe and the StereoMaker, an ABY pedal that takes an instrument's signal and splits it into two outputs113.

The people

Bjorn Isheden is the technical director of Surfy Industries and the Swedish engineer who developed the original SurfyBear circuit6. His name appears across the SurfyBear product pages as the circuit's designer, which gives the Italian company a Swedish technical anchor at its center.

Warranty and support

Surfy Industries structures its warranty in two stages:

  • First 90 days: full warranty on the whole unit, including proprietary and non-proprietary parts, reverb pans and power adapters10. For purchases made directly from Surfy Industries, the company provides complete support and will replace a defective unit within 90 days of the purchase date, including issues with the reverb pans5.
  • After 90 days: a lifetime warranty continues, but it excludes the reverb pans, and the customer is responsible for possible shipping costs5.

The reverb pan is the wear item in a SurfyBear. It is fully covered for the first 90 days, but after that the lifetime warranty no longer applies to it, so a pan replacement later in the unit's life is on the owner5.

For service, Surfy Industries asks customers to first contact their dealer to check whether the dealer offers its own warranty policy or can solve the issue directly. The company itself can be reached anytime by email at service@surfyindustries.com5.

Questions

Is the SurfyBear a real spring reverb?

Yes. Surfy Industries states plainly that the SurfyBear is not a digital effect and incorporates a real spring reverb pan. The pan sits inside the unit and connects to the circuit board with two RCA plugs, which can work loose in transit or from heavy shaking, so a rattle is often fixable by reseating them.

Where is Surfy Industries based?

Surfy Industries operates as Surfy Industries SRL in Italy. Its technical director, Bjorn Isheden, is a Swedish engineer who developed the original SurfyBear circuit, so the company has both Italian and Swedish roots.

Does the Surfy Industries lifetime warranty cover reverb pans?

Not after the first 90 days. Surfy Industries provides a full warranty on the whole unit, including reverb pans and power adapters, for 90 days from purchase. After that the lifetime warranty continues but excludes the reverb pans, and the customer covers possible shipping costs.

Is the SurfyFuzz available yet?

The SurfyFuzz was shipping as of October 2023, though its first batch had already sold out at that point. A prototype had been shown at NAMM in January 2024, where Delicious Audio filmed it, so availability has moved in waves rather than as one continuous run.

What is the difference between the SurfyTrem and SurfyTrem Deluxe?

Both recreate the vibrato channel of vintage Fender amplifiers. The SurfyTrem offers a brownface mode modeled on the second channel of a Fender 1961-1962 Showman, with a harmonic tremolo voice where the signal floats on the wave, alternating highs and lows. The SurfyTrem Deluxe adds that same brownface harmonic voice as a selectable mode.

How do I contact Surfy Industries for service?

Email service@surfyindustries.com. Surfy Industries asks customers to first check with their dealer, since the dealer may have its own warranty policy or be able to solve the issue directly. If you bought directly from Surfy Industries, it provides complete support and will replace a defective unit within 90 days of purchase.
