The Tark Audio 144 Tape Machine Emulator is a preamp pedal that recreates the channel strip of the 1979 Tascam 144 4-Track Multitrack Cassette Tape Recorder, the Portastudio that let players record multitrack demos at home on cassettes. Tark Audio's Marc took that machine's input stage as his source model and built it as a pedal combining preamp, two-band EQ, compander, low/high impedance selection and a VU meter1.
It belongs to a line of pedals guitarists have long been drawn to: tape machine preamps and boosts, most famously the FET-based preamp stage of the Echoplex EP-3 tape echo, and more recently the Walrus Audio 385. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson called the 144 "a supremely smart Preamp + EQ + Dynamics Pedal" derivation of the Tascam1.
Controls and signal path
The signal runs through impedance, Trim (saturation and gain), Dynamics, EQ and Volume, in that order1.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| IN-Z | Selects low or high impedance |
| Trim | Gain and saturation |
| Bass | Two-band EQ, low band |
| Treble | Two-band EQ, high band |
| Dynamics | Compander, on or off |
| Volume | Output level |
The Trim control spans boost, overdrive and distortion territory, and Karlsson reported that sustained saturation develops around 3 o'clock on the dial when the Dynamics (compander) stage is engaged. That gives the pedal a second life as a drive pedal: at lower settings it works as a boost, pushing into overdrive and distortion as the Trim is turned up1.
What reviewers said
Guitar Pedal X's verdict was strongly positive. Karlsson attributed the result to what he described as Marc's exacting replication process1:
"The end result of Marc's exacting replication process is a fantastic sounding Preamp with 2-Band EQ, Compander, and Low"
He singled out the huge range on every knob, particularly the Volume control, which he described as giving exceptional headroom sound and headroom1.
Where it sits
For players curious about the tape machine preamp sound without hunting down a vintage Portastudio or an EP-3, the 144 packages that channel strip, plus EQ and dynamics, in one pedal. It sits among the broader field of preamp pedals derived from recording gear, and the compander stage adds a dynamics element most simple preamp pedals leave out1.
