The TwinStomp S21 Overdrive is a dual-channel overdrive pedal from TwinStomp, a UK-based company that MusicRadar notes is gaining a reputation for its line of pedals. As the name suggests, it is an overdrive rather than a distortion, sitting in the camp of pedals that take a sound from smooth clipping up to a thicker blues drive, as opposed to the harder clipping of distortion pedals or the fuzzier textures of a fuzz1.
What it does
The S21 gives the player two overdrive voices on one box. The first channel offers less gain than the second, but both can act as a clean boost if a player wants to push the front of an amp harder, in the manner of a dedicated boost pedal. TwinStomp says channel two has more "edge", though MusicRadar's reviewer found it a subtle difference to their ears1.
Build and battery holder
TwinStomp makes its own pedal casings rather than using a generic project box, and the S21 sits in a cast stainless steel housing with four removable rubber feet and "ears" that become mounting holes1.
The pedal also carries a patent-applied-for tool-free battery holder. A 9V-style battery presses into place and is removed by pulling a metal ring, a keyring-style loop attached to a plastic cable-tie, so no screwdriver is needed to swap batteries1.
What reviewers said
MusicRadar's review was positive on both sound and build. The reviewer's verdict:
"High-calibre 'drive pedal that's worthy of your attention."
