The Vaderin Pedals Kroaked is an all-transistor, three-knob dirt box that covers both boost and distortion territory, sitting between a boost pedal and a distortion pedal. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio describes it as an "Articulate clean boost for guitar that can be pushed into compressed and supersaturated all-transistor distortion," and says it "Goes from sparkly clean to gigantic bullfrog distortion causing rumbles and amp quakes."1
What it does
The Kroaked has three controls, and the way they interact is central to how the pedal works. De Gregorio notes that "All controls are highly interactive!"1
One of the three, LVL, works differently from what its name might suggest. When the other two controls are at zero, it acts as a clean boost. As De Gregorio explains, "LVL is not the output volume, but a linear clean boost that precedes the pedal's second gain stage." In practice, that means turning LVL up pushes the pedal's second gain stage harder rather than simply raising the final output level, which is how the pedal moves from clean boost into distortion.1
