At its core is a NOS germanium transistor, a new-old-stock gain stage that comes into play the more the Gain control is turned up, driving the pedal into distortion1. Pedal of the Day described the two sides of the pedal this way: the distortion at higher settings is articulate and pick-sensitive, while the lower-gain overdrive is fat and harmonically rich1.
"the Tone Fox Overdrive Distortion really sets the bar fairly high for what's to come next from these guys"
Controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gain | Feeds the NOS germanium transistor harder as it is turned up, moving the pedal from overdrive into distortion1 |
| TEETH | Turned clockwise for increased volume, symmetrical distortion and less compression; rolled back for a heavier, asymmetrically compressed distortion tone2 |
The TEETH control is the pedal's character control: it sets how open or compressed the distortion sits, and how symmetrical the clipping is2.
Where it sits in the Vaderin range
The Tone Fox was the first pedal from Vaderin Pedals1. The builder followed it with other designs, including the HP-X Harmonic Percolator-style fuzz and the Kroaked boost/distortion, both covered by Delicious Audio2.
