The VOX Joe Satriani Ice 9 Overdrive is a signature overdrive pedal from Vox, created in collaboration with guitarist Joe Satriani. Premier Guitar's Shawn Hammond, introducing a demo of the pedal in 2010, called it "the newest effects pedal from VOX - the Joe Satriani Signature Ice 9 Overdrive" and noted that it was "fourth in a series of effect pedals created in collaboration between world-renowned guitarist" Satriani and the company1.
What it does
The Ice 9 is built around two distinct overdrive modes, which Hammond described alongside "versatile tone-shaping, and the ever-popular 'More' switch", saying that together they let "the Ice 9 deliver a wide" range of drive tones1. In practice, that means a player can set up two levels of drive on one pedal and switch between them, then use the More switch for an extra push of gain on top.
The pedal's controls are Gain, Tone, Bass and Volume, covering drive amount, treble shaping, low-end shaping and overall level1. Alongside those knobs it features the More switch, a second footswitch that gives an additional boost of drive without changing the main settings1.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gain | Sets the amount of overdrive1 |
| Tone | Shapes the treble1 |
| Bass | Shapes the low end1 |
| Volume | Sets the overall output level1 |
| More switch | Footswitch for an extra drive push1 |

In the series
The Ice 9 sits fourth in the line of pedals VOX developed with Satriani1. Players looking at VOX's wider overdrive range can also compare it with the Vox Ice 9 Overdrive, the Vox Straight 6 Overdrive or the Vox Big Ben Overdrive.
