The Vox V830 Distortion Booster is a distortion pedal for guitar, part of Vox's line of distortion pedals. Vox bills it as "The VOX Distortion Booster, for guitar with an attitude!"1 It runs an all-analog circuit, which Vox says keeps the guitar's sound warm and natural, and it uses true-bypass switching so your direct sound is unaltered when you hit the footswitch.1
What it does
The V830 covers a wide gain range. Guitar FX Layouts, an independent technical-analysis site, wrote that "The V830 delivers distortion that goes from 'just enough" to blistering," describing it as classic distortion with a warm tone and high gain.1
The site also credited the circuit with staying clear under heavy gain: "the V830's unique design gives you great distortion without losing it's edge and becoming muddy. Even power chords never" lose their harmony, according to its write-up.1 For a player, that is the usual promise of a distortion booster: gain that pushes hard without smearing the low strings together.
Controls
The pedal keeps things simple, with three knobs:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Drive | Sets the amount of distortion |
| Level | Sets the output volume |
| Tone | Shapes the overall tone |
Guitar FX Layouts summed it up: "The Distortion Booster's DRIVE, LEVEL and TONE knobs give you all the control you need to get the tone you want."1
As a boost
Because the pedal is called a Distortion Booster, some players try it as a straight boost into an amp or another drive. One of them, Jon B, reported on Guitar FX Layouts in 2025: "Using this as a boost pedal is almost ideal for me except for the low end sappage."1 In other words, the boost application worked for him apart from a loss of low end, something to listen for if you run the pedal that way.
Related Vox pedals
Vox has built a number of distortion and drive pedals over the years, including the Vox V8 Distortion, the Vox Tone Garage V8 Distortion, the Vox Tone Garage Straight 6 Drive, the Vox Satchurator, the Vox Cooltron Bulldog Distortion, the Vox Deluxe Distortion Booster v8161 and the Vox Distortion Booster V2. In its Nutube-based Valvenergy line, the Vox Mystic Edge, Vox Copperhead Drive, Vox Cutting Edge and Vox Valvenergy Fuel Injector cover overdrive and distortion territory as well. Players comparing the V830 against other gain stages may also want to look at overdrive pedals and boost pedals.

Questions
Is the Vox V830 analog or digital?
The V830 Distortion Booster uses an all-analog circuit. Guitar FX Layouts notes that Vox describes the analog design as keeping the guitar's sound warm and natural, and the pedal also carries Vox's true-bypass switching, so your direct signal is unaltered when the effect is switched off.
Can the V830 be used as a boost pedal?
Some players use it that way. Jon B, writing on Guitar FX Layouts, said using it as a boost was almost ideal for him, but he reported losing low end in that application. With the Drive control low and the Level up, it can push an amp, though the low end is worth listening for.
