The VOX V848 Clyde McCoy is a wah pedal from Vox, a reissue of the original Clyde McCoy wahs of the 1960s. It features true bypass and an AC input12.
What it does
Like any wah, the V848 sweeps a filter across the guitar's frequencies as the player rocks the treadle, shaping the tone from a bassy vowel sound to a sharp, vocal peak. The V848 carries the name of Clyde McCoy, the trumpeter whose sound the original Vox wah was built around, and the reissue places a picture of Clyde McCoy on the bottom side of the pedal2.
How it sounds
The pedal's character comes through most clearly in the words of a player who used one heavily. Gearnews's Asad described it this way2:
"It had a nice sweep range, it felt very symbiotic. And it had a nice snarl."
The same writer's own V848 reissue saw heavy use before being retired: "My VOX V848 Clyde McCoy reissue is pretty beat-up and battle-scarred, and I recently decided to retire it"2.
Where it sits in the Vox wah range
The V848 is one of several wahs Vox has built on the design of its 1960s originals. Others in the family include the Vox V846 Vintage, the Vox V846-HW, the VOX V847A, the Vox V847-C and the Vox VRM-1 Real McCoy, a recreation of the company's first production wah pedals2.
