The Gold Box Distortion is a distortion pedal from Whirlwind, described by the maker as its flagship distortion and "A Rochester Series Original." It is built as a handwired unit, in Whirlwind's words "a classic handwired tank of a box," aimed at players who want a single stompbox that covers a broad stretch of driven sounds1.
What it does
The Gold Box is a distortion pedal with a wide gain range. Whirlwind describes its span as running "from a subtle, warm, tube-driven tone to balls-to-the-walls searing hot overdrive," with what the maker calls "that vintage sustain and classic tone you grew up with"1.
In practice, that places it at the intersection of overdrive and full distortion: at the low end of its range it behaves like a warm, tube-style drive, and pushed harder it delivers the sustained, saturated distortion the pedal is named for. Whirlwind's framing leans on a vintage character rather than a modern high-gain voice1.
"This classic handwired tank of a box delivers a wide range of sonic distortion"
Whirlwind describes the Gold Box as its flagship distortion and a Rochester Series original, saying it covers everything from a subtle, warm, tube-driven tone to searing hot overdrive with vintage sustain1.
