Elektron

3 pedals on Tonebox

Elektron is a Swedish music instrument maker based in Gothenburg, Sweden1. The company began with the Sidstation, a synthesizer whose sound Elektron describes as gritty, and grew into a maker of synthesizers, drum machines and, for a stretch, guitar effects. For guitarists and bassists, the name matters mainly for one pedal: the Analog Drive, a fully analog distortion stompbox with eight selectable distortion circuits.

The range

Elektron's own legacy page puts the Sidstation at the origin of everything:

"This gritty sounding synthesizer is the reason why Elektron as a company was formed in the first place."

The company's later gear for players, the Analog Drive pedal and the Analog Heat and Analog Heat +FX desktop units, carries the same analog-circuit thinking into distortion and EQ for guitars, basses, synths and mixes234.

The Analog Drive: a multi-circuit analog distortion

Elektron's pedal for guitarists is the Analog Drive, announced in November 2016. Premier Guitar described it as "a 100% analog distortion stompbox featuring no less than eight different analog distortion circuits"5. Rather than one fixed clipping voice, the pedal gives the player eight analog distortion circuits to choose from, which puts it closer to a multi-voice distortion pedal than to a single-circuit overdrive or fuzz box.

The most player-facing detail in the announcement is the expression control. Premier Guitar reported: "The mid EQ can also be controlled with an expression pedal, making it easy to create analog wah-like sounds."5 That gives the Analog Drive a sweepable mid band, usable like a wah or filter effect, with any standard expression pedal wired to the mid EQ control.

The Analog Heat line

Alongside the pedal, Elektron built the Analog Heat and Analog Heat +FX. The Analog Heat +FX accepts CV, expression pedals, and footswitches as control inputs, with 2 x 1/4" CV/Expression pedal input jacks46.

The Analog Heat +FX accepts these control inputs46:

  • CV (control voltage)
  • Expression pedals
  • Footswitches
  • Two 1/4 inch CV/expression pedal input jacks

The Analog Heat and Analog Heat +FX are desktop units, not floor pedals. They are built for studio and live chains processing stereo sources, while the Analog Drive is the stompbox designed for a guitar or bass rig54.
