The Amptweaker Bass TightDrive is a bass overdrive pedal from Amptweaker, a variant of the company's guitar TightDrive with circuit changes made for bass. It grew out of a meeting between amp designer James Brown and bassist Greg Weeks of The Red Chord, who tested the guitar version and suggested tweaks to the Tone and Tight control ranges1. Where many bass overdrive pedals thin out the bottom end, No Treble reported that the TightDrive holds onto it, delivering "a warm round tone, a saturated 'coming off its hinges' tone and everything in between"2.

The pedal's signature feature is the Tight control, which shapes the low end's character. Premier Guitar's reviewer put it at the center of the pedal's appeal342:

"I was astonished at how much influence that control had over my tone"1

What the Tight control does

The Tight knob adjusts how smooth or aggressive the low end feels and sounds, keeping the bottom from getting buzzy or floppy4. On the bass version, No Treble described it as adjusting the attack "from a traditional, thumpy bottom end sound to a more aggressive attack more similar to a guitar tone"2. Premier Guitar's Bass TightDrive review found it allowed exact placement in the mix, from a fat, rounded tone to an aggressive, punchy one1.

Independent technical analysis by Aion FX suggests the Tight control is likely a variable low-cut placed before the distortion stage, one of James Brown's design trademarks6. Aion FX traced the TightDrive circuit in 2023 and describes its topology as a pre-drive bass cut, high-threshold zener clipping, and a Big Muff-style tone stack5.

Controls and features

The basic control set sits on the pedal's rear flank, tucked out of the way of your foot1.

ControlWhat it does
VolumeSets the pedal's output level
ToneShapes the frequency balance, with a range tweaked for bass2
GainSets the amount of overdrive, from a nuanced push to heavy overdrive/distortion7
TightDials the low end from smooth and fat to aggressive and punchy14

Amptweaker describes the TightDrive platform as providing "everything from a nuanced push to the front end of the amp all the way to heavy overdrive/distortion," and calls it exceptionally responsive and detailed7. The guitar version's Fat & Tight switch offers a related voicing choice on that model7.

The effects loop

The Bass TightDrive carries an effects loop on the back of the pedal, with a Pre/Post switch that moves the loop's position to before or after the distortion2. Premier Guitar's review describes the same flexibility in stage terms: a switch selects whether the loop sits before the pedal's first preamp stage or after its final output stage1. Aion FX notes this loop, called the SideTrak loop on the Tight Drive, can be set to come either before or after the drive circuit, which removes the need for complicated external loop switching6.

For a bassist, that means a delay or filter can sit after the distortion so repeats stay clean, or before it so the distortion reacts to the effect, all from one switch126.

Power and build

The pedal runs on a 9-volt battery circuit with a rocker switch that disengages it1. The battery is housed in a sliding drawer secured with a magnetic latch, so changing the 9-volt cell requires no tools4. The sturdy, 14-gauge steel chassis feels substantial, with the battery door sliding out from the side1.

Where it came from

The guitar TightDrive was the first pedal from Amptweaker, introduced at January NAMM 2010 as the first product of James Brown's approach of building pedals from player requests3. Brown, who designed the Peavey 5150 amplifier, said he wanted an overdrive "specifically with a tighter attack than many of the ones currently available," which produced the Tight control35.

When bassists took notice of the guitar version, Greg Weeks gave it a test drive, and after a few tweaks to the range of the Tone and Tight controls, Amptweaker released the TightDrive Bass in May 20102. Premier Guitar's review frames the bass version as a variant of the guitar pedal "with circuit alterations to better accommodate his playing style"1.

The TightDrive platform went on to anchor a family of Amptweaker gain pedals. Aion FX notes the Tight Drive predated the Tight Metal and Tight Rock by a year, with a broadly similar but simplified topology, and that the Tight Metal and Tight Drive are 95% the same as each other, just voiced differently56.

The Bass TightDrive Jr

In July 2016, Amptweaker expanded its downsized Jr distortion series with bass versions, including the Bass TightDrive Jr8. The Jr is a bass distortion pedal with the tone and tight controls shifted down an octave for bass or extended-range guitars, and it keeps the family's tool-free battery access8. Where the full-size Bass TightDrive carries the switchable effects loop, the Jr trades that for its compact format and octave-shifted control ranges.

Questions

Does the Amptweaker Bass TightDrive run on a battery?

Yes. It has a 9-volt battery circuit with a rocker switch that disengages it, and the battery sits in a sliding drawer secured by a magnetic latch, so a dead cell can be swapped without tools. The pedal is built in a sturdy 14-gauge steel chassis with the battery door sliding out from the side.

What does the Tight knob do on the Bass TightDrive?

The Tight control adjusts how smooth or aggressive the low end feels and sounds, keeping the bottom end from getting buzzy or floppy. On the bass version it shifts the attack from a traditional, thumpy bass bottom end to a more aggressive attack closer to a guitar tone. Premier Guitar's reviewer found it had astonishing influence over the overall tone.

Who designed the Amptweaker TightDrive?

James Brown, the amp designer who created the Peavey 5150 amplifier. The TightDrive was the first pedal from his company Amptweaker, introduced at January NAMM 2010. The bass version came about after bassist Greg Weeks of The Red Chord tested the guitar version and suggested tweaks to the Tone and Tight control ranges.

Can the Bass TightDrive effects loop go before or after the preamp?

Yes. The pedal has an effects loop with a Pre/Post switch that moves the loop's position, so it can sit before the pedal's first preamp stage or after its final output stage. That lets you place another effect before or after the distortion without complicated external loop switching.

What is the difference between the Bass TightDrive and the Bass TightDrive Jr?

The Jr, launched in July 2016, is a smaller bass distortion pedal in Amptweaker's downsized Jr series. Its tone and tight controls are shifted down an octave for bass or extended-range guitars, and it offers tool-free battery access like the full-size pedal. The full-size Bass TightDrive carries the switchable effects loop.

Is the Bass TightDrive the same as the guitar TightDrive?

No. It is a variant of the guitar TightDrive with circuit alterations made to better accommodate Greg Weeks' playing style, including tweaks to the range of the Tone and Tight controls. The core design, including the Tight control and the general control layout, comes from the guitar pedal introduced in January 2010.
