AMT Electronics AMT G-Packer

CompressorDiscontinued

The AMT Electronics AMT G-Packer is an optical compressor for guitar, described by the maker as an "optical compressor for guitar"1. AMT's media center now lists it as discontinued2, so it appears on the used market rather than in current production. As a compressor, it sits in the same family of effects as other compressor pedals, evening out a guitar's dynamics, and it goes beyond that basic job by adding time-based effects and cabinet simulation.

What it does

The G-Packer is built around an optical compression circuit, the type that uses a light-dependent element to control gain, a design often chosen for smooth, transparent compression1.

Beyond the compression itself, the pedal carries a set of extra features that make it closer to a compact multi-effect than a straight compressor2:

  • Delay or Reverb per preset: each preset can select either a delay or a reverb effect2
  • IR cabinet simulation: each preset holds one impulse response for both the left and right channels, giving stereo cab simulation output2
  • Noise Gate: a global setting, meaning it applies across the pedal rather than per preset2

Because the IR cab sim works across left and right channels, the pedal can be run in stereo at the end of a chain, in the manner of speaker simulation pedals, while the compression works on the guitar signal itself2.
