AMT Electronics AMT LLM-2

Volume

The AMT LLM-2 is an active volume pedal made by AMT Electronics. According to the maker, it "can mute and amplify input signal depending on what mode is selected," so it works both as a way to silence the guitar and as a way to push the signal up, not only to turn it down1.

What it does

Because the LLM-2 is an active pedal rather than a passive one, its behavior differs from a conventional volume pedal in a few ways that matter on a board1:

  • It can mute the input signal or amplify it, depending on the selected mode1
  • It runs in stereo, with left and right channels per preset, and the IR cab simulation covers both channels (one IR for both L/R channels per preset)1
  • A Noise Gate is included as a global setting1
  • It is not true bypass: AMT notes that "it is active volume pedal, it can mute and boost signal, so it's not true bypass"1

AMT states plainly that the LLM-2 ZERO "can't be used as an expression pedal," so it will not control units like the Strymon Mobius or Timeline, Eventide pedals or the Line 6 M51. Players who need expression duties alongside volume need a separate pedal.

The LLM-2 ZERO

The LLM-2 ZERO version, listed by AMT Electronics as available now, offers "smooth instrument signal volume change within three ranges by means of output signal switch," meaning a switch selects among three output signal level ranges2. That gives the player a coarse range setting before fine adjustment with the pedal itself.

Where it sits among volume pedals

Most volume pedals in the wider field, from passive designs like the Ernie Ball Mono Volume Pedal to active units like the Ernie Ball MVP or the Lehle Mono Volume, are built purely to attenuate the signal. The LLM-2's ability to both mute and amplify, its stereo operation with an IR cab simulation per preset, and its global noise gate set it apart from that pattern1. AMT has published a demo of the pedal on its media center3.

Questions

Can the AMT LLM-2 be used as an expression pedal?

No. AMT Electronics states that the LLM-2 ZERO cannot be used as an expression pedal to control other units such as Strymon Mobius or Timeline, Eventide pedals or the Line 6 M5. It is a volume pedal, not a MIDI or expression controller, so players who need expression duties need a separate pedal for that.

Is the AMT LLM-2 true bypass?

No. AMT Electronics describes it as an active volume pedal that can mute and boost signal, so it is not true bypass. Because the circuit is active, the signal passes through electronics even when the pedal is not being used to change volume, which is worth bearing in mind when planning a pedalboard.
