The AMT Pangaea CP-100FX is a compact multi-effects unit from AMT Electronics that the maker describes as an Impulse Response convolution player and effects processor, not just a cabinet simulator1. It pairs an analog preamp with digital effect blocks and an IR-based cabinet simulator, so a player can run a full amp-and-cab signal path plus time-based effects from one box. It was introduced in 20162 and AMT lists it as available now23.

The unit processes at 48 kHz with 24-bit A/D and D/A converters1. It is made in Russia, in Omsk1.

The effect blocks and analog preamp

The CP-100FX offers 14 effect blocks, arranged in the signal chain in this order1:

CodeBlock
RFResonance Filter
GTNoise Gate
CMCompressor
PRPreamp Simulator
PAPower Amp Simulator
IRCabinet Simulator (IR)
EQParametric EQ
DLDelay
PHPhaser
FLFlanger
CHChorus
EREarly Reflections
RVReverb
TRTremolo

The Preamp Simulator block simulates a clean channel of an amplifier, with Gain, Volume and a Low, Mid, High tone stack like a real amp1. The Power Amp Simulator block adds a Presence control for extra brightness, and its Volume acts as a master volume: as you turn it up, the sound gets more saturated and compressed. A Slave control attenuates or boosts the output to avoid clipping1.

Alongside the digital blocks there is an analog preamp with Clean, Low gain and High gain options4. The unit also has a parametric Pre/Post EQ5.

Several blocks have detailed parameter ranges in the manual. The Compressor's Attack runs from 5 ms to 30 ms and its Knee from hard to soft1. The Phaser's Rate runs from 0.048 Hz to 4.85 Hz, its Center from 80 Hz to 12 kHz, and the stage count is selectable between 4, 6 or 8 stages1. The Flanger's LFO can be set to Triangle or Sinus, with Rate from 0.024 Hz to 9.6 Hz and Delay from 0 ms to 21 ms, where a longer delay produces more notches1. The Resonance Filter's Lo freq sweeps 26 Hz to 560 Hz and Hi freq 560 Hz to 6545 Hz1. The Delay block runs two delay lines at the same time plus a modulation effect, with Time from 0.01s to 2.73s1, and tap tempo delay is supported16.

The controls

The front panel centers on an OLED display2 and a Navigation/Confirm knob: turn it to select presets and press to recall the selected preset, select an effect block and turn it on or off, or navigate, edit parameters and confirm values5. The unit ships with pre-programmed tones browsable via the knob5.

ControlWhat it does
Navigation/Confirm knobSelects and recalls presets, selects effect blocks, edits and confirms values5
EditEdits the preset or the effect block5
1/ATT INAdjusts attenuator settings on the home screen; resets the preset to factory defaults on the preset screen5
2/VOLAdjusts output levels on the home screen; output level for the current preset on the preset screen5
3/EQAccesses the Master EQ on the home screen; manages controllers on the preset screen5
4/SYSRenames the preset5

Up to 99 presets can be stored in internal memory, each with its own IR13. Up to 4 presets can be predefined for the Preset Map footswitch function, so you can scroll through them by pressing the footswitch repeatedly1. Each preset may also be assigned up to 16 controllers, linking sources such as footswitches, an expression pedal or MIDI CC# 0 to 127 to parameters1.

Inputs and outputs

The rear panel carries a full set of connections72:

  • Input: instrument or an amplifier's output1
  • AUX IN: 1/8'' (3.5mm) TRS for an external audio device1
  • EXP pedal input5
  • MIDI IN and MIDI OUT5
  • THRU: sends an unprocessed copy of whatever comes into the input5
  • PHONES: headphone output5

Power and what is in the box

The CP-100FX runs on 12V DC through the included power adapter1, drawing 230mA3. Use the supplied adapter rather than sharing power with other gear.

Power is 12V DC and the unit draws 230mA13. Use the included adapter.

The box contains the unit, a power supply, a microSD memory card, a microSD to SD adapter, a USB microSD card reader, a USB cable and a warranty card1.

Firmware updates and the stereo version

AMT's media center documents the firmware update procedure under both Windows and Mac OS89. The Rev A manual is stated for use with firmware V1.5.71, while the Quick Start's Rev A is stated for V1.5.65.

For players needing full stereo, the AMT Pangaea CP-100FX-S is the stereo version, an IR cabinet simulator and effects processor that AMT lists as available now, with 10 concurrent effects and a 48 kHz sampling frequency10. The standard CP-100FX is described as a mono input, stereo output version11.

The CP-100FX is related to the earlier Pangaea CP-100, a cabinet simulator that draws only 100mA at 12VDC and truncates IR files at 20.5 ms121. When connected to a computer, the CP-100FX is identified as a general purpose flash storage drive, similar to the CP-100, which is how IR files are loaded3.

Questions

What IR length does the AMT Pangaea CP-100FX load?

In its single-cabinet mode it loads one mono IR, 24-bit at 48 kHz, up to 170.75 ms long, which is 8192 samples. A second mode loads two mono IRs with the same parameters, adjustable for volume and pan. IR files must be in 24-bit mono 48 kHz .wav format.

What is the latency of the Pangaea CP-100FX?

AMT lists a total signal delay of 1.5 ms in single cabinet mode, and 1.8 ms in the mode that loads two IRs simultaneously. Both figures come from the maker's own documentation.

How do I update the Pangaea CP-100FX firmware?

Firmware is updated over USB. You download the latest zip archive named AMT_PANGAEA_CP-100FX_(FW_V.x.x.x).zip and follow the maker's update instructions, which cover the procedure step by step. AMT's media center documents firmware updates under both Windows and Mac OS.

Is there a stereo version of the CP-100FX?
