Artisanal Effects Dual Phase Jr.

The Artisanal Effects Dual Phase Jr. is a compact phaser built as a reproduction of the Lovetone Doppelgänger, the phaser and vibrato unit that Warren at Artisanal Effects believes was the OG of phasers. Pedal of the Day's July 2024 review calls it a "faithful reproduction of the famous Lovetone® Doppelgänger® phaser", hand assembled and 100% analog¹.

A compact take on the Doppelgänger phaser

The Doppelgänger, made by Lovetone, is documented by RockBoard's Pedalpedia as a phaser and vibrato unit². The Dual Phase Jr. sets out to reproduce what the review describes as "the famous swirly, creamy, deep double phasing sounds" of that original, and does so in a much smaller package. To get there, Artisanal Effects built the pedal with small surface mount components and an optimized circuit board layout, making it as small as possible¹.

How it differs from the Double Phaser

The Dual Phase Jr. is a slimmed-down version of Artisanal Effects' own Double Phaser, which is itself a clone of the Doppelgänger. The difference is size: the Jr. packs the same double phasing sounds into a 4.7 by 3.7 inch enclosure¹.

What reviewers said

Pedal of the Day's reviewer came to the Dual Phase Jr. with a favorable view of the maker, having previously reviewed the Toneshaper Drive EQ from Artisanal Effects and been quite impressed. Of the Dual Phase Jr. itself, the reviewer wrote¹:

For context elsewhere in the phaser field, other dual phasing designs include the Seymour Duncan Polaron Dual Modulated 2-16 Stage Analog Phase Shifter, which covers 2 to 16 stages in 8 steps with envelope modulation as well as LFO³, and the Mr. Black Twin Lazers Dual Phase Modulator, another dual phaser⁴.
