What it does
The Futureman is a fuzz pedal from Basic Audio, described by Guitar World's reviewer Brett Kingman as "a more original circuit" from the maker, one that combines overdrive and fuzz in a single unit1. Rather than stacking separate overdrive and fuzz pedals, a player gets both textures from one box.
In the maker's own description, "overdrive and fuzz meet up with an unconventional set of tone controls. Mids, bass and treble are adjustable with only two knobs for a thick muscular sound which can be dialled back to a scooped mid or to a treble boosted fuzz or overdrive sound for cutting through dark amps or complement multi pedal setups"1.
Controls
The tone shaping is the unusual part. Instead of a separate knob per band, the Futureman adjusts mids, bass and treble using only two tone knobs1. What that means in practice, according to the maker, is a range of voicings from a thick, muscular sound to a scooped-mid setting, or a treble-boosted fuzz or overdrive sound for cutting through dark amps or fitting alongside other pedals on a board1.
Basic Audio also makes a range of other fuzzes, including the Scarab Deluxe, the Nonts, the Face, the Super Fuzz and the Gnarly Fuzz.
