The Beetronics Bee Bee Dee is an analog delay pedal built around two bucket-brigade (BBD) chips, the classic circuit type behind the warm, darkening echoes of vintage delay boxes. What sets it apart is a digital control engine wrapped around that analog path, which lets it do things a conventional BBD delay cannot: tap tempo with subdivisions, a performance footswitch with three assignable functions, and a Pitch mode that shifts the repeats in pitch12.

What it does: BBD delay with modulation and pitch

The Bee Bee Dee's signal path is analog: two bucket brigade chips pass your signal along in discrete steps, which is what gives BBD delays their characteristic warm repeats that lose a little brightness each time around1. Guitar World's reviewer found the basic voice, with the Tone knob at its neutral 12 o'clock position, "typically analogue, giving a clean initial repeat that mirrors your dry sound, with subsequent repeats exhibiting subtle tonality changes that let them blend smoothly into your sound"1.

On top of that analog core sits the digital control layer. Delicious Audio describes the pedal as "a creative instrument built around a true bucket-brigade (BBD) analog signal path but enhanced with intelligent digital control"3. That control layer is what makes the tap tempo, the tempo-synced pitch modulation and the assignable footswitch possible.

Classic, Lo-Fi and Pitch modes

A three-way toggle selects the mode, and each one changes what the Depth and Activity knobs do1.

ModeWhat it doesDepth and Activity
ClassicStraight BBD delay with clean repeats up to 600ms, plus bathtub reverb and slapback at the lower end of the Time knob1Depth sets modulation depth, Activity sets modulation speed5
Lo-FiTextured, unstable repeats, slightly crustier with less clarity; modulation shifts both delay time and tone so repeats move between brighter and darker1Modulation controls as Classic
PitchPitch-shifted repeats driven by a softened square-wave modulation locked to tempo, creating harmonies and rhythmic patterns61Depth selects between 9 pitch options including 2 note pitches and a random; Activity selects the subdivision, always synced to the delay time617

In Pitch mode, the Depth knob selects the pitch interval, and Guitar World notes that the noon position gives an octave pitch change that stays automatically in tune1. The Tone control is unusual for a BBD delay: it is a three-position-style sweep with low-pass to the left, neutral in the middle and high-pass to the right, and Beetronics calls it the only BBD delay that goes both ways89. Turning it right thins the body of the repeats for something brighter, sharper and grittier; turning it left rolls off the top end for warmer, darker repeats1.

Guitar.com's Richard Purvis summed up the Lo-Fi mode's character:

"Lo-fi mode cranks up the oddness, but in a musical way"
Richard Purvis, Guitar.com10

The two footswitches

The right-hand footswitch is the bypass switch, with extra tricks. Besides standard latching bypass it has a momentary action for quick bursts of effect, and press-and-hold while engaged ramps the feedback up into oscillation1.

The left-hand Performance footswitch is assignable by the toggle switch above it, with three functions12:

  • Tap Tempo: tap to set the delay time; hold and turn the Activity knob to select the tap division61
  • 2X: doubles the delay speed and shifts the feedback by an octave1
  • Mod: toggles the modulation on and off, momentary or latched11

The face of the pedal carries six knobs, the two footswitches and two three-way toggles10. Alongside Time, Tone, Depth, Activity and Mix (dry/wet), there is the usual feedback control for the number of repeats1.

The Bee Bee Dee runs on a 9V power adapter, which is not supplied, drawing 200mA1. There is no expression pedal input10, and the pedal is mono, with a standard input and a standard output1. Beetronics' own answer to whether it can be stereo: "Only if you buy two"6.

Where it came from

What reviewers said

Guitar World's Trevor Curwen found the pedal strong for conventional delay work, writing that "For straight delay tasks, the Bee Bee Dee is excellent, combining classic analogue sound, a practical range of delay times and nicely applied modulation with practical elements not normally found in a conventional analogue delay"1. He noted that the Time knob's clean range runs to 600ms at about its one o'clock position, with times increasing but clarity decreasing beyond that1.

Questions

Is the Beetronics Bee Bee Dee analog or digital?

Both, in a sense. The audio path is a true analog bucket-brigade (BBD) delay built around two bucket brigade chips, but it is controlled by a digital engine that handles tap tempo, subdivisions, the pitch shifting and the performance footswitch functions. Reviewers describe it as a BBD analog delay that is digitally controlled.

Does the Bee Bee Dee have tap tempo?

Yes. Tap tempo is one of the three assignable functions of the performance footswitch, alongside 2X and Mod. Tapping sets the delay time, and holding the switch while turning the Activity knob selects the tap subdivision. With tap tempo the delay stretches from 600ms up to 2 seconds.

Is the Bee Bee Dee stereo?

No. It has a standard input and a standard output and is a mono pedal. Beetronics' own answer to the stereo question is that it is stereo only if you buy two.

Does the Bee Bee Dee have an expression input?

No. Guitar.com's review lists the absence of an expression pedal input among its criticisms, alongside the pedal's hiss. Control changes are made with the six knobs, two footswitches and two three-way toggles.

Who designed the Beetronics Bee Bee Dee?

Beetronics is the maker, and Guitar Pedal X credits the company's Filipe as the designer behind it, noting he always does things slightly differently. The pedal is made in the USA and is part of Beetronics' bee-themed pedal line.

How long a delay can the Bee Bee Dee produce?

Classic mode gives up to 600ms of clean delay, which sits around the one o'clock position on the Time knob. Beyond that point the times keep increasing but the clarity of the repeats drops. With tap tempo the delay can be stretched up to 2 seconds.
