The Black Cat Vibe Chorus Vibrato is a pedal version of the Black Cat Vibe, a chorus and vibrato effect that sits in the same family as other chorus pedals and vibrato pedals. Pedal of the Day describes it as offering "all the same circuitry as the original units did", the originals being the Custom Audio Electronics Black Cat Vibe half-rack units1.
What it does
The pedal gives you three knobs:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Speed | Adjusts the rate1 |
| Intensity | Controls the depth or amount of the effect in your signal1 |
| Volume | Adjusts the overall output of the Vibe1 |
There is also an Exp jack on top of the unit for an external expression pedal, which controls the Rate. When a pedal is plugged in there, the Speed knob is disengaged and the expression pedal becomes the only source of rate control. Pedal of the Day names the Roland EV-5 and Moog EP-2 as examples of expression pedals that can be used1.
Where it came from
The original Black Cat Vibe was a half-rack unit made under the Custom Audio Electronics name. Trey Anastasio used the original half unit in his on-stage rack, known then as the Custom Audio Electronics Black Cat Vibe1. The pedal version puts the same circuitry in a format that sits on a pedalboard, which Pedal of the Day suggests is "an easier option for most players" than having it in a rack1.
What reviewers said
Pedal of the Day's 2017 review was enthusiastic: "Recently, however, we acquired the newer pedal version of this beast, and haven't been able to put it down." The reviewer called it a fantastic machine overall1.
