The Browne Amplification Carbon X is a dual overdrive pedal that stacks two versions of the company's Carbon circuit in one enclosure. The left side is the Carbon V2 circuit, Browne's take on the Marshall Bluesbreaker format, fitted with a 3-way hi-cut switch for taming the top end. The right side is a new version of the same family, built with less sheen and headroom, a grittier character, a touch of sag, lower output and more drive on tap1.

Browne says the pedal grew out of a simple question from guitarist David Ryan Harris: "Can this be done?" The answer, in the maker's words, is "a pedal that not only embraces the bluesbreaker spirit but enhances it"1.

Two Carbon circuits in one dual overdrive

The Carbon X is best understood as two overdrive pedals sharing a chassis. Browne describes the concept as the fusion of two blue sides, the classic Carbon sound taken further: the right side is stripped of some of its sheen and headroom for a grittier, rawer essence, while a high cut was added to the left side4.

For a player, that means the two sides serve different jobs. The left side, the Carbon V2, is the refined Bluesbreaker-style voice, the same circuit Browne uses in its Ethane Dual Overdrive, where the maker says it "reimagines the Bluesbreaker with Browne's signature refinements"5. The right side is the rougher sibling: lower output, more drive, and a sagging character that reads as looser and more worn-in. Run into each other, the two can stack, with the grittier side pushing the cleaner one, or each can be used alone.

The pedal is available in Gold Folded, Black, Silver, White and Yellow finishes2.

The controls

Each side has its own footswitch with its own LED indicator, so the two halves of the pedal can be engaged independently4. The control layout is straightforward:

ControlSideWhat it does
GAINLeftSets the amount of drive or gain, like a tube amp being cranked at high volumes; turning it up also adds brightness. Left is less, right is more4
TONELeftControls brightness; right is brighter, left is darker4
TONERightControls brightness; right is brighter, left is darker4
3-way hi-cut switchLeftTames the top end; Browne describes it as cutting the top end "with surgical precision"1
LEVEL / DRIVERightSets level and drive; as of February 2025 the right side label reads LEVEL/DRIVE1

If you are comparing a Carbon X bought before February 2025 with a newer one, the right side controls are labeled differently. Browne changed the right side label to LEVEL/DRIVE in February 2025 to reduce confusion between the two sides of the circuit1.

The Carbon X also works with a loop switcher such as the RJM Mastermind using two TRS-to-dual-mono cables. The input TRS plug acts as the loop for the right side and the output TRS plug acts as the loop for the left side, with the tip carrying input/send and the ring carrying output/return3. That makes it a practical choice for players running programmable switching systems, since each side can be placed on its own loop.

Carbon circuit lineage and label versions

The Carbon circuit family traces back to the Bluesbreaker format, and Browne's original Carbon pedal carried that lineage into a standalone unit. The Carbon X is the dual-circuit extension of that line: the left side carries the Carbon V2 circuit forward unchanged in character, while the right side is a genuinely new version rather than a copy of the left1.

The February 2025 label change is the one version difference a buyer needs to know about. Earlier units carry the older right side labeling; units from February 2025 onward read LEVEL/DRIVE1. The manual was revised at the same time, with the v2 manual (February 2025) reflecting the new control names3.

Buying the Carbon X
