The Calico Effects MFT Overdrive is a handmade overdrive pedal built around a Mosfet circuit. Pedal of the Day describes it as ranging "from a low gain sound all the way up to a fuzzy-textured overdrive, and all the spaces in between," which puts its reach somewhere between a conventional overdrive and the territory of fuzz pedals.1
What it does
The MFT is a more straightforward pedal in the Calico Effects range, but the review found plenty in its simple setup. Where most overdrives use the classic lineup of Volume, Tone and Gain, the MFT swaps Tone for a Texture knob. Texture is a voltage controller that cleans up or increases the fuzziness present in the sound, so it shapes the grain of the drive rather than just the treble. Alongside Volume and Gain, the review found "a lot to explore within this simple setup."1
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Volume | Output level1 |
| Gain | Amount of drive, from low gain up to fuzzy-textured overdrive1 |
| Texture | Voltage controller that cleans up or increases the fuzziness present1 |
If you are weighing the MFT against more conventional drives, the classic Volume, Tone and Gain arrangement it departs from is the one found on pedals like those in the Boss SD-1 vs Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer comparison, and you can read more about the effect type in general on the Overdrive Pedals page.
How it is made
Pedal of the Day notes that the MFT Overdrive is handmade one at a time, and the reviewer summed up their view of the maker this way1:
"Handmade one at a time, we're really digging the gear coming out of the Calico Effects camp."
