The Catalinbread Epoch Boost Mini is a small analog boost pedal and preamp from Catalinbread that puts the preamp circuit of the Maestro Echoplex EP-3 tape echo into a two-knob mini enclosure. RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as "our version of the Echoplex EP-3 preamp," with what RockBoard's PedalPedia calls "crystal-clear tonal enhancement with all the funky output filtering and supply voltage that gave the original tape unit its distinct flavor"1.
The EP-3 connection is the whole point of the pedal. The Echoplex was a tape echo unit, but generations of players ran their signal through its internal preamp with the echo turned off, purely for the tone it added. Catalinbread has built a family of pedals around that circuit, and the Epoch Boost Mini is the smallest and cheapest member: a two-knob Jr edition introduced on 17 October 2025 at $129, about $30 less than the $159 compact Catalinbread Epoch Boost2.
An Echoplex EP-3 preamp in a mini enclosure
The original EP-3 ran its preamp on a 20V internal supply, which is part of why the circuit sounds the way it does3. Catalinbread's compact Epoch Boost reproduces the "early" model EP-3 preamp in a pocket-sized chassis, using what Guitar World described as "the same circuitry as the EP-3 itself - from its NOS Orange Drop capacitors to the output mixer stage that acts as a rudimentary frequency selector"4. The Mini carries the same circuit family forward in a smaller box.
Catalinbread's EP-3 line goes back further than the Epoch Boost. The Epoch Pre EP3 Preamp Buffer, reviewed by Pedal of the Day in 2019, "emulates the preamp circuit from the original EP-3 Echoplex" in a preamp buffer format5. Guitar.com reported that Catalinbread then "built on the success of its Epoch Pre with the more pedalboard-friendly Epoch Boost"6, which gearnews called "a 'pocket-sized' modern day recreation of a classic tone secret from the days of old"7. The Mini shrinks it again for tight boards.
The EP-3 preamp idea has spread beyond Catalinbread. Guitar World's history of boost pedals points players to "the Echoplex-flavoured Xotic EP-3 and Catalinbread Epoch Boost" as two takes on the same classic circuit8.
The controls
The Mini keeps the two controls of the compact edition: Preamp and Boost2. Both are more nuanced than their labels suggest.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Preamp | Not a standard volume control. It pans between two signal paths: the combination of the preamp and the mixer circuit, and something similar but different. It acts as a volume control over the first half of its rotation and a rudimentary frequency enhancement over the second half. Above noon it gently pushes different frequency bands, with the most perceived loudness halfway between 2 and 3 o'clock9 |
| Boost | Sets the gain level of the preamp. Fully counterclockwise is unity gain; rolling it up adds sparkle and volume10 |
The Preamp knob's split behavior comes straight from the EP-3's own output mixer stage, which Guitar World described as acting "as a rudimentary frequency selector"4. Because of that, where you set Preamp changes the character as much as the level.
The Boost control works as an always-available gain stage rather than a switchable kick. RockBoard's PedalPedia says "an added boost gives you a kick when you need it, but keeping that control at zero gives you pure Echoplex tone"1. Players who want the pedal purely as an always-on preamp can leave Boost at unity and use Preamp alone.
From the Epoch Boost to the Mini
Catalinbread introduced the Mini editions of the Epoch Boost and the Silicon Fuzzrite on 17 October 2025, both as two-knob Jr pedals at $129, against $159 for the compact versions2. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson noted that "both Compact and Mini Epoch Boosts have he same Preamp and Boost controls," and that "the Mini Epoch Boost retains Preamp and Boost, with no stated concessions" in the move to the smaller format2.
The compact Epoch Boost itself carries 20 dB of boost on tap in a chassis measuring 2.36" wide and 4.33" deep11. The Mini's headline differences are the smaller footprint, the two-knob format, and the lower price.
The family has also grown sideways. In March 2024 Catalinbread launched the Epoch Bias, which MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley called "a neat twist on the original Epoch Boost," keeping the Preamp and Boost controls and adding Bias and Filter knobs12. Guitar Pedal X notes the earlier Epoch Pre carried three knobs, two push-buttons and a second Boost footswitch, so the two-knob Boost and Mini editions are the simplest versions of the circuit Catalinbread has offered13.
Power
The Epoch Boost Mini runs on a 9V DC center-negative supply and draws 18mA1. That is standard pedalboard power, and the low current draw means it shares a daisy chain easily.
The compact Epoch Boost accepts 9V DC center-negative power only. Catalinbread warns that higher voltage voids the warranty because of the charge pump circuit inside, which raises the internal supply to recreate the EP-3's higher-voltage operation10. Treat the Mini the same way: 9V, center negative, nothing higher.

Questions
What does the Boost knob do on the Epoch Boost Mini?
The Boost control sets the gain level of the preamp. Fully counterclockwise it sits at unity gain, and rolling it up adds sparkle and volume. Keeping the Boost control at zero gives you what Catalinbread describes as pure Echoplex tone, while turning it up gives you a kick when you need one.
Is the Epoch Boost Mini analog?
Yes. Catalinbread lists the Epoch Boost Mini as an analog circuit. It is a version of the Echoplex EP-3 preamp, the tape echo unit whose internal preamp players long used as a tone enhancer and boost on its own.
How is the Epoch Boost Mini different from the compact Epoch Boost?
The Mini is a smaller two-knob edition introduced in October 2025 at $129, about $30 less than the $159 compact edition. Both share the same Preamp and Boost controls, and Guitar Pedal X reported no stated concessions in the move to the mini format.
What power supply does the Epoch Boost Mini need?
It runs on 9V DC with a center-negative plug and draws 18mA. The compact Epoch Boost accepts 9V DC center-negative power only, and Catalinbread warns that higher voltage voids the warranty because of the charge pump circuit inside.
