The Catalinbread Gallery Series Naga Viper is a limited edition treble boost pedal, a version of Catalinbread's Naga Viper built around the classic Dallas Rangemaster circuit1. It launched the Gallery Series, a limited edition line of pedals featuring UV-printed, custom artwork, and was offered in two enclosures: neon yellow and black1. Catalinbread offered it for $189.991.

A Rangemaster-style treble booster

The Naga Viper is Catalinbread's version of the Dallas Rangemaster, the highly revered treble booster of the 1960s1. Gearnews described the Gallery Series edition as "a modern take on the classic Rangemaster treble booster circuit"3, and Guitar.com's Daniel Seah noted that the pedal "takes inspiration from the revered Dallas Rangemaster"2.

A treble booster sits in the boost family: it pushes the upper frequencies into an amp harder than a clean boost would, which players historically used to drive dark, non-master-volume amps into earlier breakup. The Gallery Series Naga Viper carries that lineage in a modern pedal, and it is essentially an update on the classic Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster4.

The Gallery Series edition follows the standard Catalinbread Naga Viper circuit, adding the limited edition artwork and packaging rather than changing the design123.

Controls

The Gallery Series Naga Viper carries the same control set as the standard Naga Viper, with two knobs that address the two fixed characteristics of the original Rangemaster132.

ControlWhat it does
HeatGives you control over the gain level, unlike the original Rangemaster, which was fixed at maximum gain1
RangeA continuous control that goes from classic treble boost to a full-range boost and anywhere in between1

Gearnews referred to the gain control as the VENOM knob, describing it the same way: it controls the gain level, while the RANGE knob goes from classic treble boost to a more full-range boost3. The Heat and Venom names refer to the same gain control as described in the press release.

Together the two knobs let a player set both how hard the pedal pushes and which frequencies it pushes, something the original circuit's fixed design never allowed132.

The Gallery Series is a limited edition line of pedals featuring UV-printed, custom artwork, and the Naga Viper was the first pedal in it1. The artwork on this edition was created by artist Colin Shawcross23.

The pedal came in two enclosures, neon yellow and black, with a limited quantity of both colors available1. Where you could get each one differed:

  • Neon yellow: available at catalinbread.com1
  • Black: available only through Catalinbread's Reverb.com store12

This was a limited edition run from 2020, and both colors were made in limited quantities. The Gallery Series later continued with other pedals, including the Sabbra Cadabra Gallery edition in 202151.

What came with it

Each Gallery Series Naga Viper purchase came with extras beyond the pedal itself2:

  • A matching Naga Viper t-shirt, included free with the pedal12
  • A drawstring bag2
  • Stickers2

The bundled merchandise matched the Gallery Series approach Catalinbread later extended to the Sabbra Cadabra edition, whose pre-order bundles included shirts, hoodies and glow-in-the-dark posters6.

Questions

What is the Catalinbread Naga Viper based on?

The Naga Viper is Catalinbread's version of the Dallas Rangemaster, the classic treble booster circuit. The Gallery Series edition is a limited edition run of that circuit, described by the press as a modern take on the Rangemaster design.

What does the Heat knob do on the Naga Viper?

The Heat knob gives you control over the gain level. The original Dallas Rangemaster ran at a fixed maximum gain, so this control lets you dial the boost down from that classic full-strength setting.

What does the Range knob do?

The Range knob is a continuous control that takes you from a classic treble boost at one end to a full-range boost at the other, with every point in between available. It lets you shape which frequencies the pedal pushes.

Where can I buy the black Gallery Series Naga Viper?

The black enclosure was sold only through Catalinbread's Reverb.com store, while the neon-yellow enclosure was available at catalinbread.com. Both colors were made in limited quantities as part of the 2020 Gallery Series run.

Who made the artwork on the Gallery Series Naga Viper?

The custom artwork on the Gallery Series Naga Viper was created by artist Colin Shawcross. The Gallery Series line is defined by UV-printed custom artwork on each pedal's enclosure.

What comes with the Gallery Series Naga Viper?

Each purchase came with a matching t-shirt, a drawstring bag and some stickers. The t-shirt was offered free with the pedal as part of the limited edition package.
