The Catalinbread Sinkhole Modulated Reverb is a reverb pedal with built-in chorus and modulation. Announced in December 2023, it combines a harmonically rich "hole" reverb with what the maker calls "an impossibly deep four-voice chorus," and it was available at launch for $1991.
What it does
Catalinbread describes the Sinkhole as its "most ethereal reverb to date," capable of "rich harmonic reverb, deep chorus, tunable modulation and extended decay"1. The chorus side is a four-voice design, which is what gives the pedal its depth of movement alongside the reverb1.
The extended decay is a headline feature. Catalinbread says it has "stretched the reverb trails out to their absolute limit, with the maximum decay time almost freezing your signal in space"1. In practice, that puts the Sinkhole in territory suited to ambient and shoegaze-style playing, where long, slowly moving washes of sound are the goal.
Controls
The pedal's Modulation knob controls the rate of the LFO, the oscillator that drives the chorus movement. Catalinbread describes its range as running from "barely-discernible" to "dramatic," so it can add a subtle shimmer or an obvious sweep depending on where it is set1.
Where it sits in Catalinbread's range
The Sinkhole is a reverb pedal with modulation and chorus, sitting alongside Catalinbread's other effects in the maker's range1. Players looking at the Sinkhole's chorus side may also want to compare it with the maker's dedicated chorus pedals, such as the Catalinbread Callisto and the Catalinbread Wake.
