The Catalinbread Wake Chorus/Octaver is a chorus pedal from Catalinbread. Its Rate control sets the speed of the chorus modulation: set low, Catalinbread says it suits atmospherics, and set higher it helps the effect jump out of the mix1. The pedal runs on any center-negative DC power supply between 9 and 18 volts1.
What it does
The Wake combines two effects in one box: a chorus built on eight voices, and an octave-down effect that runs alongside it. Catalinbread describes the octave circuit as running "in parallel with the chorus effect," producing what the maker calls a "whistle-clean octave down" that does not shed artifacts into the chorus path. Used together with the Mix control, the maker positions it as a three-part effect that adds depth to a tone1.
The chorus side is built around the eight-voice architecture, which is also where the pedal's vibrato sounds come from: at maximum Mix, the maker says the pedal imparts pitch vibrato tones1. For players exploring similar territory, Catalinbread also makes the Callisto, an analog BBD chorus, and the Sinkhole, a modulated reverb built around a four-voice chorus.
Controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| RATE | Controls the speed of the chorus modulation; set low for atmospherics, higher to jump out of the mix1 |
| DEPTH | Controls the depth of the chorus modulation; back off for a subtler effect1 |
| MIX | The bulk of the chorus effect sits between maximum and minimum; maxed, it produces pitch vibrato tones via the eight-voice architecture; rolled back, it returns a dry signal identical to the input1 |
| OCTAVE | Runs in parallel with the chorus, giving a clean octave down without shedding artifacts into the chorus path; combine with Mix for a three-part effect1 |
Power
The Wake accepts any center-negative DC power supply between 9 and 18 volts1. That range covers most standard pedalboard supplies, and the 18-volt ceiling gives headroom for players whose boards run at the higher voltage.
