The Champion Leccy Fat Gett Suboctave Fuzz is a fuzz pedal with an octave twist: a Black Russian Big Muff style fuzz circuit paired with a second, footswitchable suboctave channel. Pedal of the Day reviewed it in July 2017, noting that it features asymmetrical clipping and that classic Muff-sounding tone stack, and calling it the first Champion Leccy pedal the site had covered.1

What it does to your sound

The fuzz side is described by Pedal of the Day as a take on the classic Black Russian Big Muff circuit, the Russian-built version of Electro-Harmonix's long-running fuzz. The Bloat suboctave channel, according to the review, "gives your signal some more low end beef, but also adds in some random noise splattering and thicker, warmer tones full of texture and richness."1

The suboctave circuit has a pedigree of its own: the Bloat mode uses bits of, and is approved by, Midfi Electronics' Random Number Generator circuit.1

Controls

The pedal's controls are named in the maker's plain-spoken style, with the standard function in brackets:

ControlFunction
FurzGain, on the fuzz channel1
GirthTone, on the fuzz channel1
GutVolume, on the fuzz channel1
BloatBlends the Bloat suboctave channel in with the fuzz channel1
PodgeToggle switch that sends the fuzz section into a Mid Boost mode1

Two channels, two footswitches

The Furz mode is the fuzz channel. Bloat is a second footswitchable suboctave channel, so the pedal carries two footswitches: one for the fuzz, one for the suboctave. Because the Bloat knob blends that channel in with the fuzz, the two can run together in any proportion, and the suboctave can be switched in and out on its own while the fuzz stays on.1

Podge sits apart from the two channels as a toggle switch for the fuzz section, sending it into a Mid Boost mode.1

Build and what reviewers said

Champion Leccy finishes its pedals by hand: all of the maker's effects feature custom, one-off hand painted designs, clear coated. Pedal of the Day's verdict on the maker's output was that "In short, these are well-made, great-sounding pieces of gear to add to any collection."1

Champion Leccy announced in August 2019 that it no longer ships to the UK and EU due to RoHS restrictions, and said it was working on the issue.

Questions

Is the Champion Leccy Fat Gett true bypass?

Yes. Pedal of the Day's review describes Champion Leccy effects as made with quality components and having true bypass switching, so the pedal passes your guitar's signal untouched when it is off.

What does the Podge switch do on the Fat Gett?

Podge is a toggle switch that sends the fuzz section into a Mid Boost mode. It changes the character of the Furz fuzz channel rather than the Bloat suboctave channel, giving players a mid-forward option alongside the Muff-style fuzz.

Can you use the Bloat suboctave channel and the fuzz channel together?

Yes. The Bloat knob blends the Bloat suboctave channel in with the fuzz channel, so the two run together in whatever proportion you set. Bloat is also footswitchable on its own, so you can bring the suboctave in and out while the fuzz stays on.

What is the Fat Gett based on?

The fuzz section is a take on the classic Black Russian Big Muff circuit, with asymmetrical clipping and a Muff-sounding tone stack. The Bloat suboctave mode uses bits of, and is approved by, Midfi Electronics' Random Number Generator circuit.

Does the Fat Gett have two footswitches?

Yes. The pedal has two footswitchable channels: the Furz fuzz channel and a second footswitchable suboctave channel, Bloat. That lets you switch the suboctave in and out independently of the fuzz.

Does Champion Leccy ship to the UK and EU?

Not at present. In August 2019 the maker announced it no longer ships to the UK and EU due to RoHS restrictions and said it was working on the issue.
