The Pink Elephant is an octave fuzz pedal from Creepy Fingers Effects, a builder known for fuzz designs such as the Fuzz Nugget and the Fuzzbud. It is a clone of the original Ampeg Scrambler, one of several Scrambler clones that have appeared to make the pedal's octave-fuzz sounds more attainable and affordable1. Delicious Audio's history of the Scrambler lists it alongside Fredric Effects' Scrambled Brainz as another clone of the original circuit2.
What it does
An octave fuzz generates a note one octave above what you play and mixes it with heavy fuzz. The original Scrambler used two knobs, Texture and Blend, which respectively control the octave-up level and balance the effect against the dry signal, and the Pink Elephant follows that layout1.
Build and design
The pedal runs true bypass, and Premier Guitar's reviewer noted the combination of smooth 24 mm Alpha pots, a sturdy battery snap, a true bypass switch, and overall quality construction1. Visually it is hard to miss: the pink sparkle paint job is an eyeful, complemented by a bright pink LED1.
What reviewers said
Premier Guitar's review was strongly positive on how the pedal handles the original circuit's character1:
"In capturing the essence and attitude of the original Ampeg Scrambler, Davis and Creepy Fingers hit a home run... And he does a fantastic job of accurately replicating the chaotic tonal nature of the vintage Scrambler design."
The same review concluded that "the Pink Elephant is capable of some truly otherworldly octave fuzz tones"1.
